My (medical Doctor) Thoughts On The Mayowa Ahmed Case.... by Nobody:
I first heard about the Mayowa Ahmed case three days ago, when I overheard a discussion about the matter by two colleagues at my place of work. That prompted me to do some reading up about the case(seeing as I was hearing about it for the first time)...and after doing some quick reading, these are my thoughts on the matter

Before I comment...a quick disclaimer.

As I do not have Mayowa's complete medical history in front of me, what I say here is mere speculation. As more info comes out....this might change. But no statement made here is meant to be taken as a ''final settled opinion''.

1.Ms Ahmed has been diagnosed as having an ovarian tumor. It appears to be malignant.(There are benign ovarian tumors...which can be easily removed surgically).

One thing about ovarian cancer is that it is very difficult to detect early (unlike cancer elsewhere). The only way ovarian cancer of the malignant kind can be detected easily is if women underwent MRI scans every year of their life from their twenties(not very cost effective).

When a malignant ovarian tumor is detected , it has usually metastasized...ie spread to other organs...and is usually not treatable. As an example..when former First Lady Maryam Babangida was diagnosed of ovarian cancer it had already spread (something which she herself hinted at in her public announcement that she had the cancer).

Once a cancer has spread the prognosis is poor. (Ovarian cancer has a very poor prognosis.Even in environments where everything is working...only 20% of women get diagnosed on time).

2.Does Ms Ahmed have a metastasized ovarian cancer.? We do not know...however, the evidence does ''hint'' at that. (Her going to a hospital in the UAE after it had been hinted she was going to the US....is telling). And the delays in getting treatment....if it had been caught early...ie had not metastasized....she would have had a quick op in any Nigerian hospital...and there would have been no problem.

3.If as it turns out, Ms Ahmed does have a metastasized cancer...and thus there is no hope, does that mean the family scammed Nigerians?

Not necessarily. Patients with ovarian cancer that has spread....usually get treatment called palliative care...which does involve use of anti-cancer drugs to reduce the size of the tumor, operations to improve quality of life, and lots of care from helpers. And all that costs money. Hence the money raised will still be put to good use.

I wish Ms Ahmed and her family well.

MODIFIED: For the benefit of readers....I am not involved in Ms Ahmed's management or treatment ....either directly or indirectly. Also, all my opinions on this matter are based on info that is already in the public domain.

Dear OP, there's no such thing as a "benign cancer". A tumour is either benign or malignant (cancererous). What you meant to say is that there are benign ovarian tumours e.g. Germ cell tumours, Simple giant ovarian cysts

Well, a lot of what has been said about the case is in the public domain. What isn't in the public domain is the extent of the illness.

Here is NTA's report on the case

Here is the latest Vanguard report on the matter

Also, I am not involved , directly or indirectly in Ms Ahmed's treatment and care, hence I have not violated any code of medical ethics regarding confidentiality. I am merely commenting based on information already in the public domain. It is when I start quoting directly from her medical records without permission that I can get into trouble.
