I believe the way it works is this, the coach identifies his targets in degree of importance and players he prefers (top target/first options). the only resort to others IF AND ONLY IF the main target can't be acquired, and the process continues.
in this case Koulibaly is the main target others (which enquiries might have been made) will only be pursued if the deal fails.
Also if Chelsea are still interested that mean they perceived that it can still be done.
NB. that defense must be beefed up no matter what it takes.

If you are referring to Baba, then it won't. I believe Conte is setting the team up to eventually play a 3-5-2.
So the failure to sign a left back may be more of a plan than a mistake.

It's now club policy to not sign players or offer renewed contracts to over 30s.
Recently, only Lamps, Terry and Drogba have managed this but we all can understand why.

I even thought he was talking about Ake sef, I had forgotten Baba was a leftback.

I still have small hope in Kenedy sha, but Andrew Robertson of Hull is a great attacking fullback. I wonder if he has improved defensively in his last year. He is definitely worth a shout.

Pasalic had a bad injury back in Feb and is yet to fully recover.
