Education - Why are our children no more intelligent?


Is it just me that's noticed that children aren't as intelligent as they used to be in the past - they're now smarter, but not any more intelligent. Smarter in the sense that the 21st century has made them wiser, and opened their tiny eyes to the many evils of the world, but this rise in smartness has brought about a decline in their intelligence.

Yes, you know about sex, and you know about safe sex, but you still choose the raw option - Really? Is the money spent in educating you going into the gutter. They know about all the terrible consequences in existence, but still go ahead to make damning life choices.

As a parent, what are you doing to curb the excesses of the 21st century child in your care? As youths morphing into adults, how are you moulding yourself to avoid turning into a societal nuisance?

I noticed it through reaction to jamb score. Before if you score 240 in jamb, you usually cry your eyes out. Now, scoring 240 in jamb is usually a serious cause of thanksgiving and celebration. Scoring 270 nko? A lot of today's kids don't even think that far.

Anyways, like I said, it isn't just about the jamb score but their reaction to what is supposed to be average.

Nairaland is a result of smartness and creativity in 2005, I agree, but today, Nairaland can be so much better than it is using the right tools.

Education or school isn't for everybody.


Some students really believe education doesn't pay. Who would blame them? Evidences that back up their belief is common place.

On the contrary, they are very intelligent only that intelligence border on what they shouldn't even be thinking about in the first place. E.g boyfriends and girlfriends. A 15 year old girl /boy is very intelligent in this area.

Never use JAMB to judge anything; it is an exam filled with too many irregularities.

An average female teenager (I repeat, average) can succesfully tell you the name of all Korean dramas and philipine soap operas but when you ask a mundane question regarding Chemistry or Physics, all you get is a blank stare.



An average male can tell you all about the latest data plan and the dope Female actresses in town but questions on maths are regarded as boring.



Why?? Because Education (studying) has been taken as a neccesary evil : Just to pass, you don't have to like it.



The media tells us the futility of studying : From Korean k-dramas to Nollywood crappy movies; education is always viewed as boring; something secondary to do. And most damaging of all; that education does not bring success in life.

The same is repeated by motivational speakers if we care to listen. They cite Bill Gates;Mark Zuckerbeg, Seun Osewa() as example even though they conviently ignore the fact that this people were very intelligent.


Passion is the new dope word in town. They throw it around like dung from an ant-hill; flinging it into the receptive (and blank ) minds of students everywhere. They say "find your passion. Education is not important."

The Educational Sector itself is not helping. Kids who should be in school are shoved aside because they don't have connections enough; Lecturers teach students using the same Lecture note for four years; Experiments performed in 1980's are still being performed today; Lecture halls are stuffy, hot, over-packed and the lecturer himself does not care if you are listening or not. Afterall, he gets his pay at the end of the month.



With all of this challenges present, is it the fault of the student if he fails to listen? Is it his fault that he is not "intelligent"?? Is it his fault that he finds studying boring Is it his fault that he has a dear connection to vaseline ?


It's really no joking matter to be honest. But the "dwindling intelligence" of youths is not the fault of the student. No sire, it is the failure of adults; the government, the media to take up the slack.




It's not all bad though. Students still read, they're still freaking intelligent. And they still perform wondrous acts of brillance. Such is life.

Besides, It has such a vast array of people, from different countries; each a leading figures in whichever field they specialize in.

Of course I am not comparing it in the sense of responses and user engagement quality.

I am looking at it based on its progressive nature. Quora has a platform that is appealing and comfortable and user-friendly. Nairaland on the other hand, though small, has refused to be progressive in any way. We still have basically the same platform outlook after such a long time. No new features, no modified features, everything is just the same old boring way it has always been.

Anything is good enough until it chooses to br stagnant. Then, it becomes mediocre.

Funny. I thought I was the one who created the thread.

I disagree that children are no more intelligent. On the contrary, children learn faster now despite the fact that there are now far more things to learn than there ever was.

Give a 9-year old access to a smartphone and he/she would likely learn to operate it faster than the parents can. The past generations had no technology to distract them from their studies; just boring farm work or house chores. Misplaced priorities do not equate lower intellect.

It is in the hands of older generations that corruption ate all sectors of the economy.

Since I was born, I have never enjoyed 24 hour power supply and it hurts me whenever I see kids still screaming UP NEPA whenever power is restored.

All our political leaders are from older generations. And they are all corrupt. The education system is a mess because a lot of parents will proudly register their kids in "special centers" and are only concerned about their children graduating from the university. How many parents are even educated? I do not mean schooled, I mean educated. Are you not referring to the same set of "adults" who drank and bathed with salt water during the ebola crises?

It is the older generation that have forced their archaic beliefs, religious bigotry and laziness unto the younger generation. The phrase "African time" was did become popular yesterday. In the 1980s, my dad came to Nigeria for the first time and the dude that invited he and his partner didn't show up at the hotel till a week later and when he did he didn't offer any apology. My dad even told me of how he witnessed a power cut for the first time in his life at the hotel where he lodged.

See ehn, Nigerians have a problem. Whatever the youths are today is as a result of the incompetence, myopic reasoning and negligence of the older generation.
