What she's implying is that having pregnancy plastered all over Social Media. In the olden days, our mothers wore maternity gowns to conceal baby Bumps but nowadays, we expose it all in the name of trending fashion. They did not take photographs and send to Daily Times or Concord Newspaper to publish their baby Bumps or did they?

LMAO!!!
Re: Chimamanda Adichie: "I Find This ‘baby Bump’ Thing Very Irritating" by Nobody: 8:54pm On Aug 14, 2016
She used the word irritating and almost everyone's making a song and dance of it? Such prudishness. One would think that by now everyone must have been used to the lippy, brazen, and barefacedly outspoken persona that we all love Chiamanda for.
I don't know about you, but I love this woman.

And this issue is a double-edged sword: at one breath there is nothing wrong with posting pics of your baby-bump on social media; at another breath, it smacks of pettiness—especially when it is done to show off, or simply because everyone else is doing it and so I too must follow suit (same thing goes for that annoying premarriage photo shoot we see left, right and centre—like we ever get to see predivorce photo shoot when things go awry)

In total sum, I think what Chiamanda is trying to say is that some things are just meant to be private, and I agree with that 100%.

This compulsive need that people have—especially females—to put every tidbit of their life under the glare of public eye, which inadvertently pushes them to inappropriately seductive behaviour, are resultants of untreated schizophrenia and histrionic personality disorder (this explains the inordinate attention-seeking and excessive need for approval)

People should start doing meaningful things with their lives. Humans are just so fücking petty!

Jakumo:
Eons of evolution have programmed men to be attracted to women with flat midriffs and full bosoms, BUT that attraction is replaced with a deep-seated, innate and subconscious repulsion, when the women become VISIBLY pregnant, since that disproportionately huge middle and those droopy bosoms indicate that the woman has become a MOTHER, and has thus ceased to be a potential sex partner. This is not an opinion, but a cruel fact of biological reality, which perhaps serves the purpose of INSTINCTIVELY discouraging men from mounting women who are already pregnant.

This is the precise reason why large numbers of married men proceed to cheat with younger SINGLE women, THE INSTANT their wives begin to grow in size due to pregnancy. Those men lose their interest in their pregnant wives almost as suddenly as if a switch was flipped, and find themselves HOPELESSLY attracted to women who are younger, with flatter midriffs, and preferably who have NEVER been pregnant.

Personally, I find the current fad of women showing off their pregnancies to be utterly revolting, as well as a major turn-off. While I do realize that pregnancy is where we all came from, and is also the means by which future generations are created, I have ZERO interest in seeing that condition CELEBRATED and ADVERTISED as though being pregnant is the result of some unique and phenomenal talent that needs to be admired by all the lesser mortals who find themselves literally bombarded by online photographs of huge guts with such depressing regularity these days.

GBAM! You should get a medal for this comment. I just hope our Nairaland girls/women will put hate aside and read what you just wrote, and make sense out of it.

This 'baby bump' culture doesn't just celebrate motherhood, it also indirectly says women are only good as brood mares.

I think this girl has the same level of rudeness and sassiness as Genevieve Nnaji. I think it's even typical with IBO gals that have achieved a small level of success. They suddenly feel the world revolves around them. Thats how she was calling a grown matured man her "boy". She suddenly wants the whole world to view pregnancy the way she views it, any contrary view is "irritating".
Rubbish!

Chimamanda you have really proven to be undoubtedly endowed with knowledge.
I just wish many women will know the sacredness of pregnancy.
Well I don't blame them because those who show off pregnancy are people who never acquired homely training and so could not know that pregnancy worth being respected.

I'm not Igbo, but please respect that girl. To put her achievements in perspective, name ONE Nigerian author with 4 international bestsellers. Including the revered Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe. She's just pissed with the culture of glorifying women as mere incubators when they are much more. it says a lot that someone like Kim Kardashian, whose brain is firmly fixed on increasing her butt size, is in the vanguard of this trend. And yes, elnathan is her boy. he asked for her mentorship. that makes him her boy...

She must not like everything. If having a pregnancy shoot makes you happy while pregnant please go ahead. She is talking from a celebrity point of view. Pregnancy is sacred yes but if you want to flaunt your "baby bump" please do.

Announcing to the world that you are expecting a child is not a bad thing. There is nothing wrong if the world rejoices at the birth of your child.

because kim kardashian who is probably not as educated as you are did it does not mean it is right. its a childish nonsense, again - nonsense!

As always of course, my respect goes to this lady of uncommon sense. Recently someone told me Chimamanda was ashamed of her pregnancy and so hid it till she gave birth. I just shook my head.
What do they know?

When some people think everything should be on the pages of newspapers. Everything should be on social media. They forget there is life outside social media.

Way to go ma'am!
Please raise your child in the proper way before the media hijack upbringing of your own child from you.
Same way I don't like to post pictures of my kids on Facebook;when they're old enough they'll decide if they want to be on social media or not.

Okay. And you were born in 1976, right?

I remember some time last year or so, or maybe two years ago, I can't remember. I put up a post saying I have a long 'thing' and needed someone that can handle it, and you sent me a wrong pin...twice. Wicked girl. lol! undecided

Simply her opinion. I'm sure she didn't subject herself to house arrest, and people actually saw her.
Folks, don't be easily swayed by people's opinion. Everyone is entitled to one. Chimamanda's opinion is not law!

abi o. the child is sacred so why do you announce the birth and do a ceremony on the naming. One can go on and on and i think she also needs to understand and appreciate diversity. i am not a fan of baby bump pictures but i cannot criticize it.

One last point though: she (Chimamanda) might actually be criticizing the act of just following the bandwagon to do baby bump. on that I would agree.

You're absolutely right on course!
There are certain things I've decided not to get my future kids engaged in without their consent.
Let children grow up as children rather than get them entangled in things they wouldn't want to identify with early. Example, fame.

Fortunately, her opinion doesn't count on this issue. I take objection to her use of the word irritating. It's not her body, eyes or baby.
