The recent events have revealed unprecedented corruption by Nigerian politicians and their appointees. We have seen trillions of naira been looted unashamedly by our so called political leaders and in the process leaving the country in distress - no infrastructure, not health facility, no power, etc.

Interestingly, we have also seen how bankers (our Harvard trained financial professionals) have collaborated with politicians to short-change the country. We can talk about cases of money laundering, packaging of fraud as legitimate transactions, hiding of government money in secret accounts.

Recently, a shocking revelation emanated from NPA that about N11.23B was kept away from government in some banks. This despite directive from FG that all government revenue must be remitted to TSA - it is running to a year now FG gave this directive. A number of these thieving banks still refuse to declare or remit to government the fund in their care in flagrant violation of FG's directive. This is not only unfortunately but also criminal for any bank not to declare revenue it collected on behalf of government. This is pure stealing by our Harvard trained bankers.

As if that was not enough, close to $2.3B of NNPC fund was traced to hidden accounts in some banks this week.

With these revelations, the usual currency round tripping and many other money laundering activities of our banks, I am beginning to think bankers are more corrupt than politicians and that without the active connivance and technical advice from bankers on how to hide, launder, etc, politicians wouldn't have been able to bring the country down on its knees.

I therefore call on EFCC to beam a strong searchlight on the banking industry. If need be, the industry should be "fumigated" so we have only the sane ones in that industry even if they are locally trained.
