There were also outspoken atheists during the time of the worship of the Greek gods . There were outspoken atheists in parts of Europe that were not affected by the Inquisition . The adherents of Jainism were atheists who practiced Jainism openly . There was also Asia and Africa . Please just admit no atheist made any achievement during that era and before then and stop making daft assumptions .

That's a pretty lame excuse. You know the nickname of the Medieval period? The Dark Ages. Not much was going on during that time (at least compared to periods before and after it). One of the doctrines Confucianism centers upon is ancestor worship – which has to do with the veneration of the deceased ancestors whose spirits are believed to control the fortunes of the descendants. So this means that your suggestion that it could be atheistic is wrong .

Confucianism has a little similarity with deism . It's doctrine suggests that man can improve morally and ethically leaving no room for deities - it does not reject deities . It just believes that man's abilities to become better or improve are innate and does not require any intervention of deities .

In fact , the Chinese always believed that the spirits of the ancestors had to power to control fortune of their descendants .This explains why they are superstitious - execrable as seen by atheism - even though they are officially an atheist state currently .

So yes , I thought this through and its obvious as per the title of the thread .

The Catholics - the Dominicans and Franciscans - by the 18th century , rejected the ancestor worship by the Confucians because it saw it as a form of idolatry . Because the Confucians kind of deified the spirits of their ancestors - you could deduce this from their usual rituals and sacrifices . We can clearly see that the spirits of the ancestors played the role of gods but it does not explicitly say such . Pope Benedict XIV even ordered a ban on Chinese rituals . Remember , atheism rejects any form of worship or deification .

The Taoists also believe in many gods - polytheism - and ancestor worship . They worship mostly on holidays in their calendar when food is set out as a sacrifice to the gods or the spirits of departed ancestors. The Taoists also engaged in fortune-telling and other forms of divination .

Communism - an atheistic ideology - does not tolerate any form of religious practice and since China is an atheist state , these religious practices are verboten .
