I've had the chance to play around with a 4K PC monitor, the Asus PB287Q but my issue is that with the windows UI scaled to 100% it's practically impossible to read anything off the screen so I've had to scale the windows UI to 150% which means it's now rendered at 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) on a 3840 x 2160 (Ultra HD) monitor.

When you compare the cost for a 28inch 4K and a 28 inch Full HD monitor you are looking at between 80-100% more for the 4K PC monitor.

Based on this, for productivity it's pointless getting a 4K PC monitor if all the work you'll be doing will be rendered at Full HD resolutions. For gaming, that's not an issue for the 4K monitor, the image is rendered at 4K.

edit 1/9/2016: after some more research, I finally worked out that 150% scaling in windows translates to 25% of 3840 x2160 which equates to a rendered resolution of 2520 x 1440. Therefore the ideal resolution for productivity is 3440 x 1440 on a 21:9 aspect ratio monitor.

It defeats the price for 4K when most of my day is productive not gaming, why pay much more for 4K when I'll be working most of the time in 2.5K? Misewell get a 2560x1440 and leave at 100%. That'll work relatively cheaper. I'm looking at getting the Acer XR341CK or if I'm blessed the Acer Predator X34..can't justify the price tag though.

Yeah, I don't think anything you've said here is true. A 4k monitor is great for gaming. You can get the Best 4K Monitor for Programming if you search online, and click on the link that I've shared.
