An attack on the Sultan of Sokoto by a coalition of 22 Christian groups led by the National Christian Elders Forum (NCEF) has caused a stir among Nigerians.

Christian organisations recently described the declaration of September 12 as public holiday in commemoration of Eid-El-Kabir celebration by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, as the height of impunity. Christian groups also alleged that since the advent of the Buhari administration, the head of the Islamic faith in Nigeria have usurped the duties of the federal government by announcing, declaring, or extending public holidays. The group had noted that the responsibility of declaring or announcing a religious Public Holiday is vested in the federal government and such responsibility is sacrosanct.

However, the statement by the Christian leaders has attracted a backlash from Nigerians who have advised group to concentrate their efforts in propagating the tenets of their faith rather than dictating to others how they should run their affairs. The angry commentators, said in the announcement, the Sultan was simply informing the Muslims about their religious obligation. He did not at any time attach the function with declaration of public holiday.
