Apple just recently released its iPhone 7 but it seems plans have long been on for the iPhone 8.

The iPhone 7 body is made from aluminum, as are many other high-end smartphones. What then is Apple’s next step? We think we can get some clues from the new high-end variant of the Apple Watch.

The Apple Watch Edition Series 2 isn’t made of gold like the last one, it’s zirconia ceramic. This watch “only” costs $1,250, about a tenth of the last Apple Watch Edition, but this fancy material might become the default for Apple in future iPhones.

When the iPhone 8 comes out in about two years, it might drop the aluminum for zirconia ceramic for several reasons. Watch nerds can certainly tell you about one of them — durability. Stainless steel and aluminum are strong materials, but they’re also what material scientists call “ductile.” That means they can deform when struck. That’s why aluminum devices can scratch, dent, and even bend (remember Bendgate?).

Ceramics have the potential to be considerably more durable and resistant to scratching, if they’re formulated right. Zirconia ceramic in particular possesses extremely high mechanical strength, toughness, and fracture resistance. For this reason, Apple has submitted a number of patents on ceramic case designs.

For smartphones (and smartwatches), zirconia ceramic could be even more useful. Ceramics are extremely efficient at dissipating heat with the right treatment. The Apple Watch has alumina mixed with the zirconia powder, allowing it to far surpass the heat dissipation of aluminum alone. The most relevant benefit in the iPhone would be that zirconia ceramic is transparent to radio frequencies. There are antenna lines on the back of the iPhone allowing the signal to escape from the aluminum case. That wouldn’t be necessary with a ceramic phone.

Right now, the zirconia ceramic Apple Watch is the uber-expensive model. With two more years of design and manufacturing refinements, Apple might be able to lower the cost of zirconia ceramic to a similar point as current aluminum processes. It may even be more efficient on a large scale than aluminum. Of course, a few years ago we were all but sure Apple would use sapphire glass in its iPhone screens, and look how that turned out. Anything can happen.
