You said it all... Just that there is a provision for something we call Conversion for SSC and DSSC officers to either RC or DC respectively. I'd you are successful at the Conversion Ex, the same terms and conditions that apply to RC officers (for SSC) and DC (for DSSC) applies to you... If you ask me, I would say say go for DSSC if you are a graduate but the competition is usually more intense than SSC

Joining the Nigerian Navy requires you to go through the DSSC only and the same thing i know is applicable to the Nigerian airforce too.

Questions :

1.Why does the Nigerian army have DSSC and SSC

2. Also for a graduate joining the army through either of the 2 commissions,how often do you get promoted?

minimum 26 to 35 maximum but even if U R
younger with a first degree U R welcome. Navy
insists on maximum of 30yrs and younger with
first degree for DSSC.......
Army, Navy, Air force is anyone's choice. Army
is a place people R wary of because they have a
tradition of promoting at a slower rate than
others (though that is changing now), Air force is
a place deemed better than army in terms of rate
of promotions, though the level of discrimination
for appointments against DSSC is far higher than
that of army (in the army the man who can do
the job and is qualified gets its; airforce they will
consider Regular Commission qualified or not
before DSSC). Navy is deemed the best in terms
of pay and other things; the problem is that its
deemed the most difficult to enter...........so U
choose as your Spirit leads

D major ting is if u want a career that always to practise in your field to a fair extent, go for DSSC, if u want a career in the military, i.e, u want a chance to grow in the military, command troops and get a chance to get to the peak of your Military careeer, its SSC!

ssc get to the peak of military career......very very slim...infact u will be frausssstrated..and u will leave the army.

I thought this might be useful: THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THOSE COMMISSIONED INTO THE NIGERIAN ARMY! There are 5 types of commission in the Nigerian Army (NA) - Not Armed Forces. They are: 1. Regular Combatant (RC). Training takes 5 years. 2. Short Service Combatant (SSC). Training takes 6 - 9 months. 3. Direct Regular Combatant (DRC). Now attained on conversion from DSSC. 4. Direct Short Service Combatant (DSSC). Training takes 6 - 9 months. 5. Executive Commission (EC). Training takes 2 - 3 months. Details of such commissions are to be found in the Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service (TACOS) for officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces but a summary goes thus: RC and SSC are combatants, trained to fight battles. Others are not meant to be combatants. Both SSC and DSSC are of relatively short durations (not more than 12 years I think, excluding extension of service) and must convert to RC and DRC respectively to enjoy a longer career. Theoretically, RCs and DRCs can rise to become generals ie Brigadier Generals, Major Generals etc. (Remember the pyramid structure? The higher it gets, the smaller it becomes. In other words, many are called but only a few are chosen). DRCs are mainly professionals - surgeons, pharmacists, chaplains, surveyors etc. - and are usually not found in the core combat arms of Infantry, Armour and Artillery but are be found in the Army Engineers and Signals. ECs are made up of former soldiers and do not usually exceed the rank of Major. There are varying criteria for the various commissions. In reality the advantage is more on the side of those who were originally RCs than those who were originally SSCs in terms of age, rank, numbers etc. However, anything can happen, for instance Lt. Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi (rtd.) rose to become Chief of Army Staff (COAS) even though he wasn't originally an RC. Although DRCs may never become COASs or General Officers Commanding (GOCs), they can apart from being Staff Officers also hold command posts in corps or services in which they predominate. These include Education, Medical and Finance among others. Life in the Army here in Nigeria can be promising, particularly now that efforts have been made to consolidate emoluments but achievement of success or wealth in the Army (here in Nigeria as well as is in other countries) is a product of motivation and determination. If you want to live well, you will. If you don't, you won't. The choice is really yours! For RC or DRC, mininum years of service is about 15 years and life as a cadet can be quite strenuous. Generally, training is in the Infantry Corps Centre and School (ICCS), Jaji, Kaduna State. As for the DSSs and ECs, their training is usually less strenuous, not as in NDA where RCs and SSCs are trained. Cadets are usually humourously welcomed with the euphemism, "Unfortunate Nigerians, you will nearly die but you will not die!" But you should survive if you are physically fit afterall, many have gone before you. As a cadet, you are entitled to allowances which may not really cater for your family if you have one but could go a long way to help you sustain yourself. If you wish to obtain more information on the Nigerian Army and the types of application forms available, you can check with the Army Public Relations Department in any military barracks near you. For RC, you need at least 5 credits including English and Mathematics. For SSC, DRC and DSSC, you must be a graduate. Lawyers in the army are usually found in the Army Legal Services and the Military Police. They can also be found in lesser numbers in other corps and services. As for your private practice, it all depends on what type but you won't be expected to have your private practice as a lawyer alongside your military career. Lastly, it is also noteworthy to say that the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) now offers some post-graduate courses for those in the military as well as for those not in the military.

SSC guys dont get promoted faster. Get ur facts right. You actually have to do courses and pass them before u are promoted as an SSC officer where as DSSC officers get promoted every 4 or 5 years without having to write exams. Same way an SSC officer can covert to be a regular officer, there is also a conversion exam for DSSC officers. I will rather prefer DSSC to SSC. And trust me, that "beef" of regular or SSC officers is practically dead. A former chief of Air Staff was an SSC officer. Many stuffs are now political. Even though a DSSC officer may not get to be a cheif, how many regular officers actually fill in those positions.

I will advise u go for either navy or airforce (both are dssc). Leave army and their wahala, but if u prefer army, don't even think about ssc. Even the regular officers prefer the dssc for their children/wards. Forget all these people arguing about what they are completely ignorant of.

As for parade, even before conversion, u may command. It depends on where u are serving and the availability of officers. Commanding of parade is not based on ur mode of entry cos a dssc officer may even be ordered to command while there are regular officers. Seniority is also a factor. But let me tell u, most military officers dont even like parade. Juicy appointment? Bro, that one depends on ur Corp and who tell u that being a regular officer suggests a juicy appointment? For promotion, I'm not too sure but I think it should be around 2 to 3 yrs.

For SSC, ur age is a very big barrier.

Dssc measn Direct short service course; Those are people in the army that are in charge of the administration(Army is not abut fighting alone , u need administrators) E.g doctors , educationist.etc..d reason y dey was Dssc in d 1st place was bcus dey (Nda) did nt hv d course at 1st.so u go 2 d university nd come back nd b a medical doctor 4 dd force. .u get boss.

2)Yes promotion depends.As a Dsssc ur promotion is slow (ys u get 2 star once u r through but ya promotion takes 4rm four years at 1st.But once u get 2 d rank of a captain, It will take 5yrs each 2 get 2 d nxt rank.den once u reach major it takes 6 yrs 2 getv2 d nxt rank.but it will stop at 6yrs.so u see most retire at colonel downwards..at most brig Gen nd u can be NYSC Director general...cus 4rm 2 star general 2 colonel is abut ..google d 4rmer dg of nysc.3rd Dg b4 d current one.
SSC; are fighters so dey get promoted fast also in the long run.you can convert to RC afta abut 10yrs. (buh age of course is d problem. U must retire at the age of 60yrs weda RC, DSSC OR SSC)
A mathematician has a place.You can be in ssc as a flyer. .or dssc u start overseeing schoolsAnd u can be a commandant sef)
It depends if u wanted 2 go to RC. nd love to fight etc ..but u could not, Ssc.buh if u dnt really want 2 fight lyk dat Dssc.Your choice is important.
