Recent government activities had hinged towards the recouping the nation’s commonwealth stolen by past and present ‘rulers’ of Nigeria. News of several arrest, bail, voluntary refunds, freezed assets and accounts, other financials abnormalities had filtered our media circle for the past 18 months. According to government, looted funds running into billions of Naira had been recovered via the ongoing anti-corruption war. Despite these fight against corruption, government should be aware that this war shouldn’t be about financial corruption alone. It must be an all inclusive war. A war that cut across all spheres of life. A war against “looters of brains”. We must all realize that the looters did not only steal our money, they stole the brains of young Nigeria. They looted the intellectual capability of future leaders’ thinking towards morality. They looted the mental capability to think our way out of the economic pit that we find ourselves. Just like out looted fund were laundered abroad or deployed to buy choicest properties in Nigerian most expensive cities, the youthful brains are looted abroad in form of brain drain while the rest are used by these same looters as political thug and internet e-warriors during and after elections. We now live in a society where the right things are not acceptable and the wrong decisions are always seen as normal and ultimately applauded. Our society is now one where passengers persuade unwilling bus driver to quickly pay his “roadside due” to the gun tottering police officer in order not to be delayed. It is now normal for you to pay civil servants ‘something’ or ‘administrative charges’ as used by some in order to make them perform the job they are employed and paid to do! Priest now organized special thanksgiving for released looter on bail to the admiration of the entire congregation. Our youth celebrates the same people who put them into the abysmal state they are and simply criticize those who had enough effrontery to tell the truth in order to correct society ills. While everyone is talking about a way of moving out of the economic recession, sadly, we did not realized that it was intellectual recession that really led us to where we are in the first place. Just as government is making frantic effort to bring us out of the country’s economic quagmire, they must also make deliberate effort to re-orientate our young leaders in order to make this country great. Government must make sure our exported brains come back home to contribute their quota to the development of the country.
