Buhari Gets $1bn Loan From Adesina’s Led african Development Bank by Limitednow: 5:49pm On Sep 26, 2016
THE African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved $1 billion loan towards meeting the deficits in Nigeria’s 2016 Budget, believed to partly responsible for the country’s economic crisis.


AfDB President, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, disclosed this to State House correspondents on Monday after meeting with Vice President and other members of the Economic Management Team (EMT) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.


Stressing that Nigeria is the largest shareholder of the bank, Akinwunmi said the bank is in Nigeria to offer its strong support to the country as it faces tough time.


He said: “African Development Bank (AfDB), we have a very strong delegation team to meet Vice President and the economic management team. The bank’s largest shareholder is Nigeria. It is very important for me to be here and to talk to the Nigerian government about the challenges and opportunities that are in Nigeria.


“I’m not here to lecture the Nigerian government. I’m here to support very strongly. We have said that we are going to support the Nigerian government with the budget support to be able to deal with some of fiscal imbalance that they have. We are looking to consider for an award of $1 billion to help to deal with that particular deficit.”


Commenting on the loan, Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun said what had been a great relief to the economic team was the synergy between “what we’re trying to do and what the AfDB, repositioning under Adesina, is trying to focus on. And most of the sectors, the specific programmes that the bank has are the very areas we want to focus on the economy.”


She said while the government was looking unto the AfDB for $1bn budget support, “but beyond that, there are lots of loans and initiatives around agriculture, job creation or the youths, solid minerals, women empowerment and women’s access to finance, access to finance to the SMEs.”


Asked about the interest rate on the loans, the minister responded: “Its concession is way below two%. It’s about 1.2%. We’re not over borrowing, what we’re trying to do is to ensure that this money we’re borrowing, we use it on the key infrastructure that will drive the economy.”

We need to know what this money will be used for.. In clear terms for we can monitor it... It should not be divided into different projects... but to found 2 or three projects from beginning to end or even one project but let it be made open

if only the borrowing were yielding visible impacts then I may have lauded such efforts, but to say the govt cannot account for the 2.2trn loan under one year is reprehensible and unscrupulous. The economy keeps sinking in recession amid increase in govt income.
I pray that a new political party is voted in come 2019 so that they will help expose the astronomical and clandestine grafts of this govt.

Dr Akinwumi Adesina, president-elect, Africa Development Bank (AfDB) has credited his success at the poll to the tireless work of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s Finance Minister.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Adesina thanked outgoing president, Goodluck Jonathan and the newly sworn in president, Muhammadu Buhari but showered special encomium on Okonjo-Iweala.

“I would like to specially thank Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for her vital role and tremendous effort in delivering this successful outcome. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, as Nigeria’s Finance Minister, worked passionately for our campaign, and our success would have been impossible without her tireless work shepherding support among many of the esteemed Finance Ministers and Governors at the AfDB.

He then thanked all those involved in the process for electing him. “I am deeply humbled and honoured to have been entrusted with the great responsibility of leading the African Development Bank (AfDB) at a time that presents such great opportunities and also profound challenges for our continent.

“The AfDB campaign and election has been an incredible experience, and I am grateful to all those who supported me along the way and to each and every person with whom I’ve met and exchanged ideas and hopes for inclusive economic growth on our continent throughout this process.
I am thankful to have been given the chance to travel to so many parts of the continent – small states, fragile states, and large states across Africa – to feel the pulse of African leaders and peoples. I met with young people and women – Africa’s greatest assets, with small- and medium-sized enterprises, and with Africa’s business leaders. From rural areas to burgeoning cities, I saw vast opportunities for a greater and more inclusive Africa. I am hopeful and excited about the prospect of building on the great work of President Donald Kaberuka at the AfDB,” he said.

Adding that: “Together, we can build a stronger and more prosperous Africa, with smart infrastructure, energy for all, a strong private sector, new economic opportunities that will deliver quality jobs and hope for millions of youths and women, revival of Africa’s rural economies to lift many out of poverty, and regional integration for shared prosperity.

“The shareholders of the AfDB from African and non-African countries gave strong support, for which I am deeply grateful. Together, we will build a new Africa with inclusive and green growth.

“I commend all my colleagues who contested for the position, their countries, and supporters. They conducted great campaigns. They are all great assets to Africa. I am truly humbled by the support of many Presidents across every region of Africa. Africa is my home.”

“I would like to give my special thanks to a few people in particular without whom this success would not have been possible: former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for his nominating me, his confidence, and his steadfast, enthusiastic support; President Muhammadu Buhari for his strong endorsement and rallying support for us.”

N4.1 trillion debt in 1 yr, N2.6 of it domestically. Meanwhile he wants to sell national assets to raise more money to spend in addition to more foreign debts being incurred.

I am not the one asking for unconditional and un-begrudged help from unlikely sources for your president.
If you had any modicum of sense, you would have realized that your president has burned too many bridges with certain people.
He is your president and has shared the spoils with you. He is not our concern.
If I were you, i'd be focused on how that money is spent.
