abdulwastecx:Are the Chinese not already systematically taking over with all these infrastructure 'MOUs' we are signing with them?. Just do your 'proposed' lucrative assets sales and see the people that will buy them. |
| Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by abdulwastecx(m): 4:39pm On Sep 28, 2016 |
NL1960:I think we can take advantage of the rise of China. The Chinese have the money, the know how and technology. They need raw materials and market, we can use that to our advantage, we can copy or borrow their know how and technology to build our nation. We can provide the market, cheap labor force that Chinese desire. The Chinese don't have history of colonization like the west. |
| Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by NL1960: 4:47pm On Sep 28, 2016 |
abdulwastecx:They do not have the history because the colonization of the West is now past history. They will create their own. You normally see that for every infrastructure 'MOU' they sign, it is their companies that do the work. They cannot transfer their technology to you because technology is never transferred, it is normally 'stolen'. Check all their projects and see if there is any 'local' in their sensitive technology areas |

mavverick:True sir, the north would not be worse off. The region has massive untapped resources and potential. They can't stop doing rankadede because they are deliberately being subjugated by their leaders who deny them education. Once they are educationally liberated they would start asking questions and have more a able hands. Some of the locally sourced paint filler materials are from the north. I won't be surprised if they have titanium dioxide pigment also. |

abdulwastecx:I agree with you to some extent. No colonial master has the interest of the host country at heart. But you will agree that the Asian countries you listed above more or less are mono ethnic nations with similar religion or with no emphasis on religion. They make decisions based on merit without religious or tribal sentiments. Nigeria would have made more progress under awolowo than shagari in my opinion judging by the progress made as premier of the western region but for tribal sentiment. |

NL1960:You are absolutely right sir. I think the Chinese still have a larger part of their population living below their poverty line, it make more sense for them to employ them in their companies here. Most of the infrastructure job done by Chinese companies in Nigeria re MAJORLY financed by the Chinese that give them edge in negotiations. We need these infrastructure since we don't have the money to do them, we can invest our scarce resources more into education and social programs that will bring us the technology needed to developed infrastructure ourselves. Technology can be transfer, the Chinese have successfully transferred American technology by been a destination for cheap labor, the cooperate private sector are provided driven, they will employ and do business in any climate where profit can b made. If it will be more profitable to employ a Nigeria as an engineer in a Chinese company, I think the Chinese will do just that |

gbadexy:well, I don't find this post offensive at all, I find it rather sad, pathetic and shortsighted. I don't know if it's Nigerian mentality or what but you guys are always so eager to shower white people with praises, like wtf? Don't you have self worth? You even throw logic out of the window. At a time where the Arabs have made Dubai a success, the Chinese are a world power, Indonesia and Singapore are also success stories, here you are screaming for re-colonisation.smh. Lemme ask you a question, why are all your short- comings as a country attributed to the Buhari administration but all South Africa's progress is not a result of the South Africa's government? Aren't those double standards? Are you saying 80 percent of black population, who also the biggest middle class aren't responsible for the progress and direction of their own country? What are black accountants, lawyers, economists, architects, etc doing if they not part and parcel of South Africa's progress? The same South African government you accuse of not doing much has been responsible for the massive infrastructure expansion post 94, building roads, dams, airports, houses schools, universities etc and it's currently building power plants. You are the type of Nigerian that touches down on South Africa and see any positivity and go back to Nigeria screaming "Oyinbo this, Oyinbo that" what of Kenya then? Since they are also doing better than you? Come on bro, I know it's makes you feel better saying such things in light of your hardships but don't mislead people |

Skewed globalisation, and World geopolitics affects us adversely due to poverty of mind, get rich quick syndrome, but most precariously lack of inhibition to unproductive sharp practices and our affinity to corruption. Is it any wonder that the 'Change starts with me' mantra, one of the best mass reorientation programme ever launched by any government in recent times were albeit in absence of matching economic programme, thus lacking in any incentives to be generally welcomed, accepted, and socially entrenched in our psyche, all due to the attitudes earlier mentions. We have all it takes in material and human capital to establish the enabling environment to develop and progress as a people if only the change will start with me!! As a developing country we have to eschew corruption, abort get rick quick mentality in establishing enabling environment to take advantage of globalisation and gain the respect of the brutal geopolitical bereaucracies that have helped to advance countries of our likes. We dont need white or red to do it for us, we need Nigerians and each other. |

Contrary to what you think it actually makes better financial sense to build in this area than some of the egbeda, agege, ikorodu, ota, alimoso etc areas better income and ROI better capital appreciation. Also, it is too simplistic to put down to herd mentality peoples reason for choosing to live in this area. I choose to not go into it in a public forum but I have lived in both and know the difference for me and my family. diordaves: |

IronGalaxy:Despite the economic downturn, I still give God the glory. So I have no idea of what you mean by your hardship. I only stated my opinion that I am entitled to, you either state yours or take a pass. I don't have shortage of self worth sir, rather excessive of it. You don't have to take the post to seriously and personal. The whites are a very organised and developed race. It's the obvious fact. doesn't mean we don't have our own area of strength. I've stayed in my subsequent post on the reason I feel nigeria and Africa at large is underdeveloped. In any case, any development an organised african nation makes still depends largely on inputs of the Asians and Caucasians. Can any african country make the steam engine ships or train used as far back as the 18th century? |

erico2k2:You are very correct. The major company producing water glass in nigeria that I get the product from have not been producing since early this year till now because they said they don't have access to gas to operate their autoclave. Even the power generation in nigeria is hampered by unavailability or irregular gas supply. |

What you say is true, but we also have to ask ourselves what have our leaders achieved in the last 56 years, with particular emphasis on the last 30 years. Do you know that once upon a time $1 = N1 in fact self there was a time that Naira was stronger ? You may find that if you ask the common man on the street, things are so bad now that they might prefer to bring back colonial masters, as grimy as it sounds. They will tell you to leave sentiments and focus on survival. abdulwastecx: |

Some Eastern European countries are so poor, yet I dont think there is any country in the world where you will not see a Nigerian representation. Also those Eastern Bloc countries are being propped up by the EU to some extent to develop infrastructure, improve education etc, and this might be thier undoing, and hence why countries like the UK voted to leave the EU, they didnt like the idea that the standard of countries like Romania was now being equalised (freedom of movement for goods and labour) with countries like the UK. When the EU first started, it was with countries with similar GDP's and hence things worked well to some extent (UK, France, Germany, Holland etc). What has ECOWAS achieved since inception, apart from Mercedes S class rolling in during every summit and big fat Sofas for them to sit on during the summits, you then wonder if its a beer parlor summit self .abdulwastecx: |

Hello Madam A very good point you raised, what I have found out is that the cost of construction is comparable in most areas of Lagos, made worse if soil test confirms you need raft etc. I feel if one can avoid raft/pile (depending on soil test), you can save a lot and get things done quicker. Lets start by the reduced cement, iron rod, planks, casting labour, carpenter, iron bender. Then Ikorodu starts to look like a bad idea compared to Lekki, up to roofing costs are comparable its the finishing that may be cheaper depending on the choice. If I was building a rental property, I would not use the same level of finishing in Ikorodu compared to say Agungi, what I cannot compromise on is if both require raft foundation, if that was the case, then Ikorodu would not make sense to me. As Sege pointed out, some places in the mainland cost more to construct when compared to Lekki where everyone assumes would cost a arm and a leg. See this story here https://www.nairaland.com/3375436/alligator-caught-gbagada-lagos-used, to build where Aligator lives would not be cheap. gabbytabby: |

Good concepts here, a change to see real things rather than random google pictures. I have some questions. # The metal one would not be as strong as the concrete one, will you have something like a rail for it or will it be open like that ? # A friend of mine who built at cooperative villa told me he used wood to cover his steps, I told him to polish/wood stain it, and then lacquer it for a nice finish. Would you be doing the same and would you be wrapping wood on all sides, as if it were my house, I would not want to be seeing any metal. # The concrete one, what thickness of reinforcement did you use for the spine that runs in the middle ? # Tiles/marble would look better on that, again how about kids in the house (you know kids, they may want to take shortcut and jump down) ? Any safety measures here # Do you also think it would have been better to lock the edges onto the wall as well on one side of the concrete steps ? A simple google search, I found some ideas. See how some of the stairs are locked into the walls, that way if something heavy is being lifted up the stairs, I would feel more comfortable. Also, is there a concept of using aluminium railings and glass balustrades in Nigeria ? Abi we go import that one also ? Simple tempered glass see through. segcymoor:

IronGalaxy:Do you think you are a free man in your own Land? A police man or military man would slap you and infringe on your rights an nothing would happen. I think it is you that has self esteem issues that's why you are overly sensitive about this issue. I could really care less who is in charge so far things get done right. You criticize me for suggesting a colonial Rule but I bet you can't wait to travel to the white man's land to live under its rule. Don't you think military regime was worse than colonial Rule? To give you something to vent more about, I don't really believe the black man is ripe for democracy. Anyways, we aren't in the politics section. I still retain the right to air my opinion but what I won't take from you is a condescending tone. The very well off and exposed people are the most humble from my interactions on this forum and I continuously meet them regularly. I think you need to go engage yourself somewhere else and don't bother with my self worth or lack of. |

gbadexy:Oga Gbadexy, please take it easy with him.... I agree strongly with what you have been saying on this matter. If truly we Africans have been successful in leading ourselves, Africa in general and Nigeria in particular won't be where it is today...in a seemingly backward and foreign-dependent state. Just like you alluded to earlier, I believe that South Africa won't be technologically and economically advanced they way they are presently if the whites had not settled there even after the end of apartheid. Most likely, there won't have been the likes of MTN, MULTICHOICE, SHOPRITE, ETC coming from South Africa to make fortunes of us here in Nigeria whereas we have no Nigerian company doing the same in any other African country, not even Dangote's refineries in Ethiopia and elsewhere. Come to think of it, aside from South African companies, which company from any other African country is making waves in Nigeria? None except those from South Africa with the white man influence! |
