Buhari Toying With Nigeria's Unity - Southern Leaders by ishiamu(op): 12:22pm On Oct 19, 2016
Elder statesmen and leaders from Southern Nigeria have accused President Muhammadu Buhari of toying with the country’s unity.

The leaders, who met yesterday in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, under the aegis of Southern Nigeria’s Peoples Assembly (SNPA), accused Buhari of executing a northern agenda.
Present at the meeting were leaders from the South East, South West and South- South geopolitical zones.
At the opening session, the Chairman of the Yoruba Unity Forum, Bishop Emmanuel Bolanle Gbonigi, who was represented by Senator Femi Okurounmu, said that Buhari has harmed Nigeria’s unity by solely promoting northern interests against the interests of other tribes.

He decried the President’s appointments so far which he said were in favour of the North, declaring that Buhari is pushing Nigeria to the brink of disintegration through his sectional interests.
His words: “We ask Mr. President to stop these ethnically-biased appointments into offices. More and more sections of Nigeria are increasingly feeling marginalised due to the actions and policies of government which are increasingly becoming sectional.”
On behalf of the South-South leaders, elder statesman, Edwin Clark, said Buhari had tactfully excluded Southern Nigeria from the political equation of the country.
Clark, who said he could not be cowed from baring his mind, warned that “those who think Nigeria is their exclusive estate” should have a rethink, declaring that “the country belongs to us all”.
The former Commissioner for Information said that Nigeria was already cruising on the highway that led to the civil war in the 1960s and early 1970s.
He expressed strong displeasure over the leadership style of Buhari who he said was not worried about the implications of his biased policies.
He added that Southern leaders will invite the President to a town hall meeting to dispassionately discuss issues affecting Nigeria with him.
In his opening remarks, the Coordinator of SNPA, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, also expressed concerns over Buhari’s leadership style, saying that Nigeria was more divided now under his watch.
The former Vice President, who was represented by Chief Mbazulike Amechi, said that the meeting would discuss herdsmen’s attacks, restructuring, agitations in the Niger Delta and other parts of the South, collapsing economy, ongoing corruption war and the growth or decline of democracy in Nigeria.
Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, who opened the meeting, enjoined the leaders to “pursue those things that the states of Southern Nigeria can do to foster their economic and political interests”

That's good news. Let them not discuss until the north controls all aspect of Nigerian system then our eyes will clear. Northern Nigeria born to rule mentality is very real, kids who know nothing about the true situation in Nigeria except for indomine and video games, will keep posting trash on nairaland.

Southern unity indeed,I dont see where Igbo ,Yoruba, the Niger Deltans and other minority groups in the south will come together to have a common front, any attempt to force unity among rilvary group amount to the building of time bomb.It can never work,as it is in the past so shall it be in the present.

Only a united southern Nigeria can defeat northern Fulani hegemony.

It's time southerners put aside their differences, unite to change their political fortune for good but some omo ales, akoti letas, back stabbers, betrayers who have sold their souls to eternal servitude for a plate of pottage won't listen.

The hegemonic 'northern' contraption by lugard via land size, bogus census and unjust political structure/constitution which has been the bane of our progress must be revisited and not allowed to continue if we want a better united nigeria.

Familiar pattern; Some groups will rocket a hate-filled character to power, arm him with ruthless state agencies, providing him with the constitutional right to utilize the coercive instruments of the state to unleash terror.., use the media to proclaim him a messiah against all advice and when their invention turns around to hunt them down as preys, they will start yelling allover the place, looking for collaborations to help them undo their weird invention...

They helped Gowon to power against their son ogundipe and once the war was over and he started reneging on all promises made, they went up in arms till he was overthrown. Their son made an unlettered Shagari president , subsequently ruining what could have been a serious march on the path of genuine democracy. Not done, after losing out in the 1983 elections, they went haywire calling for the military to take over. Buhari and Babangida artived, truncating democracy for almost 20 years. When Babangida cancelled the june 12 elections and made Shonekan president, they went again to Abacha in droves, publicly begging him to take over! He did so, then sat tight as they were told and started maiming them and they ran to all corners of the world shouting NADECO!

It took the combines efforts of all Nigerians to get rid of the military again and a combined solidarity of the whole country to surrender the two top presidential candidates of the major parties to these rowdy people. Eight solid years of Obasanjo over with all they skewed privatisation charade that produced the Otedolas and Jimohs of this world, they started again! Moaning, yelling and gasping for air as if they cant exist without gnawing relentlessly at the much vaunted 'national cake'. . Then Jonathan did the 'unthinkable' by adding Ebele Azikiwe' to his name and they went mad. In familiar display of unguarded ethnic hate, they went to the land of the dead, resurrected a primitive dinosaur and made him the commander in chief..., against all warnings!

Now,the man true to prediction is showing them pepper and they are running from pillar to post trying to reinvent another NADECO! These sophisticated irritants should be allowed to stew in their own juice. Take your country and align with the desert inhabitants so you can be making some 90 year old male chauvinists your leader, they will say no. Oyah, stay here and show more understanding as it regards the multi ethnic nature of the country and the political reality that suggests power sharing and all that, they will say no! What is it do these people want? Who are these people? How can you be cutting your nose to spite your face and yet see yourself as the most brilliant in the room? Sophisticated nonsense every where!

Agreed there's distrust between yorubas and igbos but don't you think it's time we set it aside for a better Nigeria?

Are you a southerner and comfortable with the way things arehuh

People only unite for shared interest or against common enemy. If they want fiscal federalism enough and want to push against islamization enough why not. I don't know if any southern region wants it bad enough. Alot of people are content with Afonja vs Igbo fight, Imo vs Owerri, or some tribal fight.

Everyone know Nigeria runs off southern productivity. Whether it be oil revenue, IGR, or simply contributions to federal purse.
