Save Lagos Groups Lambasts Ambode Over Demolition Of ‘slums’ [must Read] by sweetsandy4luv(f): 3:53pm On Oct 25, 2016
A civil society organization, the Save Lagos Group in a press release made available to NEWSFLASHNGR, carpeted the All Progressives Congress (APC) led government in Lagos State for inflicting pains on the masses living in the state.

Specifically, the Save Lagos Group faulted the decision of the Akinwunmi Ambode led government to clear structures in areas it considered as ‘slums’ across the state, saying the policy was not well thought through as it would further pauperized the poor citizens of the state.

This is coming just as the Save Lagos Group also punctured the rationale being canvassed by the state government for carrying out the demolition which it hinged on security as laughable, saying there are better ways to ensure security of the people of the state than the mass demolition of property of hapless citizens.

In a statement it issued on Tuesday, signed by the Converner, Comrade Adeniyi A. Sulaiman and the Director, Media and Strategy, Comrade Olaolu Oladipo, the Save Lagos Group stated that the state government has shirked its responsibility of catering for the wellbeing off the poor segments of the society via the action. To the Save Lagos Group, the state government ought to have provided alternative accommodation for those that are to be affected by the demolition, saying the failure to do so amounts to denying them their fundamental rights to decent living.

“We have taken time to study the concept of the programme being embarked upon by the state government to rid the state of criminal elements. This gesture we commend but we hasten to say that the modus operandi for carrying the policy out has left some much to be desired.

“Our opposition to the policy stems from the fact that while it is good for government to restore the aesthetic value and beauty of the state to its pristine value, care must be taken so as not to leave the vulnerable segments of the society out.” The statement reads in part.

Reacting to a statement credited to the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku who stated that the state government was not out to inflict pains on the people of the state, the Save Lagos Group added that the fact that some people of the state have staged a protest march to the seat of government means that the policy has failed.

lets embrace development not turn our back at it - there's no how slums won't be demolished if we really want massive development.

These are the people that crave for development yet they won't want shanties and slums to be demolished!

Those slums were constructed on Govt properties and are illegal settlements.

The fact that it's residents pay rent to live there shows that it's a business venture, rather than a humanitarian crisis....... just like street begging.

Right move but wrong approach, if you've ever gone down to where these slums are located, you'll definely realise that the people living there are not safe (health wise). But then sending these people to the streets pose an immediate threat to the society, many of these people will turn to beggers, thieves and all manners of negatives vices.

Those collecting rents from those illegal settlements will be rueing loss of revenue.. Those non-indigenes who really have nothing tangible doing in Lagos should think of heading back home and start a life there.

The slums harbours and rare thieves that are causing chaos in the state. They are the ones that attack innocent citizens in the traffic. Slums need to disappear in Lagos state to ensure our security.

You should report any slum in your area for immediate demolition. If Lagos is not for you relocate to your village, must you live in Lagos?

You save Lagos by keeping illegal settlements that are rife with crime, disease and decay?

These people don't know what they want.

There should be no slums in Lagos. Many times, giving the poor the ability to leave a blighted area is all that is necessary to improve their situation.

Slums are really big challenges. The biggest health challenges are communicable diseases such as cholera, but non-communicable diseases: malaria, respiratory diseases and malnutrition." Malaria and (most) respiratory diseases are communicable, and infectious diseases, particularly helminthiasis, will contribute to malnutrition. I support the demolition, and also encourage the government to provide them alternatives.

It's true they have villages, but do you think they reason the same way you do? or do you know the reason why they decide to suffer in Lagos rather than going back to their villages?
