Amosun’s ‘Gateway of hell’

by Olatunji Ololade, October 28, 2016 at 12:00 am

•(A reminder to a bungling governor)

Ogun State looms like a gothic platitude of pain and death from its transit townships but the “Gateway State” is Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s bower of bliss. There, in his stately Eden, he lives immune and insensate to the ravages of ill-will and pent-up fury tearing the natives apart from inside out. Governor Amosun must be having a blast inside the Government House at Oke Mosan. He does not have to rise and retire to his bed everyday wondering if he would die along the deadly stretch of Lagos-Abeokuta highway, particularly at the spots where innocent children, mothers, fathers – dependants and breadwinners – die like stray fowls, accidentally or by installments, in his administrative landmine.

Governor Amosun’s loved ones are extremely lucky; unlike the mother who left home with her three children only for them to be brought back as mangled corpses from an accident, caused by bad road, to the deceased’s husband. Amosun is certainly favoured by the ‘gods,’ unlike the bereaved families who sent their wards to school only to receive news that they had been crushed to death by a steel container in a gory accident along the Sagamu-Benin expressway. Is Governor Amosun neglecting that death trap because it is a ‘federal road?’ If that is the case, is Governor Amosun solely remunerated from revenue he makes from Ogun State or from the ‘federal purse?’

Governor Amosun is one lucky dude as he does not have to live up to the promise he made to the poor, hopeless pupils of the Community Primary School, off Agoro road, Owode-Titun, Ota, Ogun State. It’s almost two years since they lost their classrooms to a violent rain squall, yet most of the 740 pupils have been learning with tears, under a crooked shed held together by wooden poles and corrugated iron sheets. The school’s Parents Teachers Association (PTA) constructed the shed last year when it was clear that the state government will not come to the children’s rescue. Although Governor Amosun promised to rebuild the school when his campaign train visited the area to seek re-election, he has since forgotten his promise and the area.

Thus through scorching sun blaze and violent rain squalls, the pupils huddle together helplessly, in futile lunge for comfort and cover from the ravages of nature and Governor Amosun’s ill will, tearing at their fragile frames. For the only public primary school in the community, the descent into decay started in May last year, when a rainstorm blew off the roof of the block of six classrooms and the staff room. The storm also tore off the entire side of the building. Yet Governor Amosun conveniently forgets the sad fate of the poor pupils of Community Primary School in Owode-Titun, Ota.

Some cratered meters from the school, the stars are still a backdrop for the inhuman condition at Owode junction, just before you get to Ifo. Is Governor Amosun waiting for that expedient moment of disaster or road mishap of immense magnitude to occur before he swoops in with a bereaved mien and overzealous aides, to misappropriate anguish where he feels none?

The natives of Ijoko, Agoro, Ijako, Iyana-Ilogbo, Ilepa, Ijoko, Alade, Oju Ore, Ilo-Awela, Elekunmefa, Imise, Onihale, Singer, Lusada, Ewekoro, Atan-Ota and Igbesa to mention a few, are still dying slowly and accidentally, from the perils of plying their muddy and badly cratered roads and there is still ugliness in Lafenwa, Aiyetoro, Olugbode and various communities along Itele road.

From a distance, the piercing and indiscriminate glare of sunlight and moonshine desecrate these townships like tombs slipshodly carved along the graying highway that leads to Abeokuta, Ogun State’s capital city. Closer, the people and houses in the communities take shape like a stream of accidental shadows, their hard noises striking one’s face and making the senses numb with jarring clarity. It is their noiseless undertones that however, evoke intense feelings of awe and curiosity. Sad desperate glances of the natives inspire a thirst for buried narratives that they miserably learn to endure as unreal jests made by death.

Guess his Excellency in Ogun State, has learnt to glance without flinching at the straggle of human suffering emblematic of the pale ghost of his “Gateway State.” Wonder if he is unaware of the deaths and squalor across the townships; wonder if he knows that there are schools with better structures, histories, progressive and ideological foundations that deserve as much attention and support as he is currently giving his model schools’ phantasm; wonder if he simply chooses to ignore the descent of the tourist tracts where decay and death spit venom at the hapless citizenry, like Siamese cobras every day.

Governor Amosun is probably unmoved to affect heart-felt responses to the malaise. Perhaps he is making spirited gestures even as you read to extend citizenry-centred governance cum democratic dividends to the disillusioned natives of the state. Perhaps he just doesn’t know how to go about it.

Ignorance is not an excuse for denying the citizenry good governance and their fundamental human rights. It is no longer tenable to hoodwink the citizenry by chants of ‘Change’ and platitudinous avowal to abolish squalor and foster general prosperity; time has revealed what section of the citizenry such ideological ‘life boat’ solutions are meant to deceive. It shall no longer be “politically expedient” to neglect a class of the governed just because, by will or circumstance, they inhabit parts of state the ruling class would rather not lose sleep over; except at the time of election or re-election.

Governor Amosun is spending his second term in office which makes it even more dangerous for the APC to maintain dominance in Ogun State if he fails. When the party eventually presents its candidates for public offices in 2019, what glowing achievements will it point to as Amosun’s legacy and reasons why it should be given the people’s mandate again? The oft over-hyped and derided bridges and roads in Abeokuta? Or the equally contentious model school projects? These familiar arguments have gotten too old now and they are infinitely strange to the poor citizenry braving the perils of the state’s townships every day.

Life in Ogun State’s townships is in grave decline. Together, these neglected tracts constitute an ambiguous ‘sick rose’ accentuating Ogun State’s descent into a food for worms even as you read. Though a sick rose, Ogun State is manouvered to mimic a growth cycle in the hands of Amosun and amid the rabid PR blitz launched and managed by Camp Amosun.

That is why the state government will do nothing even if foreign investors  cum fortune hunters like cement giant, LafargeWAPCO Plc, subjects its host communities to terminal death, by its dangerous production activities, in desperate pursuit of profit. (It is instructive to note that LafargeWAPCO perpetrates in Ogun State, atrocities it wouldn’t dare commit in France and other European nations but that is a discussion for another day.)

Ogun State’s manifestation as a sick rose satirizes Governor Amosun’s preferred portraits of it as a bower of bliss. It reveals an inner hostility; the governor’s flirtatious art of concealment necessitates that truth’s approach must take the form of a rape. If not, the people of Ogun State will continue to die by the onslaught of the conqueror maggots of hypocrisy, neglect, arrant betrayal and underdevelopment afflicting the state.

Does Governor Amosun, like too many of his peers, consider truth as he hates to see it, as a perverse fetish? Does he believe that any critique or contradiction of his gospel of ‘Change’ is a swerve from goodwill and fruitfulness? If so, his much celebrated ‘Change’ project is diametrically opposed to the APC’s gospel of ‘Change.’

Everything is power play. ..2019 governorship race. .

Senator olamilekan Solomon adeola (YAYI) , TINUBU'S GROUP, OSOBA GROUP. VS AMOSUN'S GROUP.

Amosun is very poor at politics and he is betraying the love and trust people once had for him.
In 2007 ,amosun left PDP for ANPP because he wanted to be the governor, despite the fact that otunba gbenga Daniel tried in his first term, people still voted for amosun because they loved him.
It's was the general belief then that the 2007 governorship election was rigged for Pdp's otunba gbenga Daniel

2011, amosun went to meet tinubu, tinubu brought him to ACN despite strong objections from osoba.
Before the elections, osoba nearly frustrated amosun out of the party to join CPC but tinubu felt the people loved amosun so he stuck by him.
Amosun won, not later he started fighting osoba.
Osoba wanted the larger spoils of the victory since he felt amosun met him in the party. Tinubu later intervened again.

No doubt amosun tried in first term, he increased ogun state monthly IGR from 700 million naira to around 3 or 4 billion naira or so. He started new road expansions, he turned most parts of the capital city around. He changed the state education policy. He started free education, he distributed free textbooks, notebooks, school bags to every ogun state primary school. pupil and secondary school student. He started green revolution in agriculture in ogun state. He resolved the olabisi onabanjo university crisis, tai solarin university management crisis too. He started paying workers of the tertiary institutions that were being owed and promised to pay them backlog owed by the pdp administration.

No doubt amosun started on a bright note, hence the people loved him and stood by him. This weakened osoba because you can't win a war against a governor that has won the hearts of the people. But osoba still gave it a try, he wanted to control party structure, all the national house of assemblies members were loyal to osoba . some of the commissioners who were loyal to osoba had to resign, hon olusegun Williams that defeated former speaker dimeji bankole was torn between loyalty to osoba or loyalty to amosun that will ensure the success of his re election bid due to his performance.
Eventually he settled for amosun's camp

The final jigsaw for osoba was when tinubu supported amosun instead of his long time ally osoba. Maybe if tinubu had known things will be like this now maybe he would have supported osoba and make sure party structure remained in ososba's hand instead of amosun. But the truth is if APC had presented another candidate apart from amosun maybe they would have lost . Because amosun's performance deserved a second term.

Osoba left Apc for amosun, he joined sdp, their candidates was senator odunsi. They came a distant third in the election.. Gboyega nasir isiaka came second.. Amosun came first, amosun won 11 local government while Gboyega isiaka won the remaining 9 local government.

That victory made amosun more arrogant, yes he had defeated former governor osoba, former governor gbenga Daniel, dimeji bankole, buruji kashamu, senator obadara, senator gbenga kaka etc.
He felt he should be a political God father himself. Forgetting that he achieved all those because of the love the people had for him.

He started failing with his policies, first his achievements in education failed, his free education in primary and secondary school failed, his model school failed, he couldn't pay TASCE staff salaries, he started owing workers cooperatives deductions

He couldn't complete most of the Federal governments roads he started, he started many projects in Akute, many flyovers ,he completed some while many he couldn't complete. Infact those that were begging amosun to intervene in the lafenwa federal government road are regretting now. Because the road was even better than it's current state right now.
Amosun told us he will diversify instead he increased the taxes collected on taxi drivers, okada riders, hotel owners, shop owners etc.

Now amosun is fighting tinubu quietly, osoba, Senator YAYI whom are members of his party

He is at war with dimeji bankole, Paseda, gbenga Daniel, kashamu, Gboyega nasir isiaka.

His only helper is obasanjo and buhari..but we all know obasanjo isn't reckoned with in ogun state and buhari can't save amosun in a party affair.

But amosun still thinks he has the support of the masses. But what he doesn't know is that even the masses will abandon him if he doesn't stop his arrogance and mind his public utterances.

Amosun should please complete various roads projects in ogun state and we are yet to see the model schools he promised us. Amosun should please pay for the 2016 wassce fees, the students aren't allowed to check their results because you are owing. Amosun should please pay tasce staff their 16 months salaries

If care is not taken amosun will only be remembered for paying workers net salaries excluding tasce because amosun himself have destroyed all his first term achievements

And amosun should please stop comparing us with abia state or imo.. This is ogun state, and because some states can't pay salaries doesn't mean we should worship you for paying net salaries.

Well, I shouldn't have responded to you but that would be unfair. For your information, I am a Senior Staff in Ogun state Civil service paying tax of about #8,000.00 monthly. If I ain't doing enough then I don't know.

As for Local Governments in the state, they are just there in name as none of them except probably Ado-odo/Ota L.G, even that can't spend a dime without the self-imposed Lord of the Gateway state's consent.

@Omofunaab, your analysis is wonderful except when you allude that the only thing remaining for Amosun is the love of the Masses. Going by the 2015 elections, the Ijebus have shown their dislike and distaste for Amosun while the Yewas have since shown that he stole their mandate given to GNI (he won the election but was stolen). As for the Egbas, many of them have now developed a kind of hatred for the man because of his disregard for humanity and sheer greed. The majority of the citizenry have turned their backs on the evil man in Oke-mosan.

I will want to disagree with you that ijebus hate amosun, i visit ijebu ode and sagamu regularly, i know what amosun did there. Infact amosun did well for egbas and ijebus more than the yewas. Amosun only tried in ado odo Ota local government.

The only reason amosun lost most part of ijebu is the buruji kashamu and adebutu factor. There were cases of huge financial inducements in that area. Ofcourse kashamu has the money to spend and trust ijebu people, they don't joke with money. But despite the huge financial inducements , PDP only managed to win narrowly in ijebu axis.

I agree with you that the yewas didn't vote amosun, but it's not because they dislike him but simply because they felt Gboyega nasir isiaka, whom happens to be from yewa, should be the governor. .and remember yewa has never produced the governor in ogun state before. So we understand if they vote pdp's.

But if APC should present YAYI in 2019 ,then am sure the yewa people will ditch Gboyega nasir isiaka for YAYI who happens to come from yewa axis too

Lastly amosun won 2015 election and i don't think Gboyega nasir isiaka won.

Thanks

I love Civil arguments like yours @Omofunaab, yet it is my opinion that Amosun lost the last election to GNI but was rigged at collation with Obasanjo's influence. That is for another day. I don't know what the governor did in Ijebu that is special. Is it the galloping bridge over the Sagamu/Benin road or the one in Lagos garage that motorists avoid like a plague because work never cease on it even after its flagoff? Or the hurriedly completed Ejinrin/Ibadan road that is already dilapidating? The win of PDP in Ijebu may be due to Kashamu's largesse but who wouldn't fall for such when you live in penury? In Ago-Iwoye for example, Kashamu singlehandedly reconstructed a school building whose roof was blown away by storm and killed a pupil. When it was obvious that the state government would do nothing, he rose up to the occasion and even gave money to parents of the deceased.

In Isara Reno, I challenged a youth who was in the fore front of Kashamu's campaign why he was supporting such a candidate. He responded by saying that the man gave money for his school fees when he almost lost his admission at OOU. He added that he doesn't care whether he was a drug Baron or no. In short, the Ijebus supported a man who had always been there for them.

As for Ado-odo/Ota, well the people of Agbara, Igbesa, Sango, Iyana-Ilogbo, Ijako, Ijoko, Oju-ore, Owode, and a few others will disagree with you that Amosun did anything for them.

On the issue at hand, the Governor has failed terribly with his strings of uncompleted road projects littering the state. Yet his 15-storied complex and mansion in Ibara, Abeoukuta has not stopped in construction. He owes workers cooperatives deductions, pension deductions up to 72 months and has withheld Union dues for over a year. The ongoing strike action by the workers in the state has brought to the fore another ugly side of the Owu born dictator.

As for those comparing Ogun state to some other states, well for your information, our IGR alone feeds some 5states just that we are ruled by a kleptomaniac who has forgotten that time will eventually reveal all.

Lol.. You just called amosun an owu born dictator.
Chai am from owu too oooo.. ..we don't have dictatorial tendencies it's just that we are extremely stubborn.

But be that's as it may, I think amosun's second term is nothing to write home about, he has destroyed his first term achievements.

Even though he has increased our monthly IGR from 700 million to 4 billion, we still think he isn't doing enough.

Believe me, even egbas don't love amosun like before again.

But i still believe amosun won that 2015 governorship election . Egbas can never vote in PDP again.. PDP lost woefully both in presidential and governorship election in ogun central senatorial district.

Egbas will even vote APGA than vote pdp.. .and i don't think APC could have rigged an election when PDP was in power.

Even when Obasanjo was President, the Lagos-Otta Expressway was an eyesore. Same thing happened under Osoba. And the same scenario is replaying itself under Amosun.

Why should this same issue keep recurring? Amosun's greatest failure is not in the provision of roads alone, but also in the provision of healthcare facilities. If you go to the General Hospital in Otta for treatment, you will take to your heels!! angry

I guess you meant when Obasanjo was President. Yes, that may be somehow true but remember he dualized the road in the first place so it may not be entirely true.

@Omofunaab, please don't go into tribal e-war with anyone especially here on nairaland. God has so blessed us in the Southwest that we have nothing to proof to anyone. When our leaders perform well, we encourage them but when the same fumble, we don't hesitate to criticize appropriately.

This is ogun state, and because some states can't pay salaries doesn't mean we should worship you for paying net salaries.

you should be happy that you are been compared to Abia and IMO state,,that have very beautiful cities and nice houses.....
imagine where people live in Ogun state...this is even d capital..

Lovely written piece. I live in Ogun State and as such can attest to the valid points raised in the article. Whoever still supports Amosun must be his relative or someone getting some benefits from him. Anyone else needs his or her head checked. Amosun is a total failure in his second term no doubt. So many uncompleted projects. In fact, in the area of road construction, Amosun is an utter failure. I'm afraid if he should continue like this, APC might lose the next election woefully. Piece like this should be on the front page for people to see.

Amosun is treading on a dangerous path moving from a graceful and humble man to an impulsive dolt.

Yes, he did well in his 1st tenure hitherto receiving good compliments from the people of ogun/Nigeria as a while and promising he will complete the remaining projects.

Ladies and gentlemen, the amosun we used to know has gone. There are so many bad roads in ogun calling for serious attention. If anyone ply sagamu - papalanto road where olorunsogo power plant is located, the person's destiny may get ruined on that road. Also Look at dilapidated road condition alagbole, ijoko, agbado, akute, ajuwon axis, very shameful.

The education in ogun is falling day by day, un remitted money, unnecessary tax deduction, owing workers corporate deduction and spewing hateful and battered words at your workers.

The earlier this useless man realise the love we have for him has seriously dwindled hence he must get his act right, finish his abandoned projects and fix other mess on ground else he will regret ever been governor of the state.

Shoprite construction in oke-ilewo ought to have been completed by now but this useless man, maybe he is the one frustrating/halting such plans to work and now he is building one 15 storey building at Ibara junction and a shopping mall at GRA.

Amosun, people of ogun state are angry at u.

Nice analysis from y'll and kudos to your unbiased analysis, omofunaab. cool

Lalasticlala, we need this on FP for ogun state people to err their grievance more on this useless governor.

Nice one.
Amosun is on a self destruct mode. He forgets he has lots of political enemies already in the states. Now the people are no more behind him.

He started well in 2011, he initiated lots of road projects, he even ventured into federal government projects too. Now he has abandoned most of the projects, he forgot the main reason he was re elected was because we all thought he will complete these road projects.

Amosun is so arrogant now, he makes reckless statements ,his only saving grace is that he is not owing workers monthly net ssalaries.

If care is not taken amosun's actions will make APC to lose ogun state. People are angry at him, the funny thing is that he doesn't know that, he thinks they still love him..

I don't know what is stalling the completion of that shoprite at oke ilewo,.

Amosun started work on major roads in Akute and you later left them claiming no money yet people are saying work is ongoing on his own projects at ibara GRA .

He is fighting tinubu, senator YAYI, osoba, the PDP hates him. Now he has betrayed the love people once had for him .

E be lyk say amosun dey under one spell wey dey mak em dey misbehave

Lalasticlala, Seun. Let ogun state people react to this.. Maybe amosun will know we are not really happy

@omofunaab, I like your analysis. You really have a thorough understanding of Ogun state politics.

True, Amosun did quite well in his first term in office, but like wolewole200 said, Gboyega Isiaka won the 2015 gubernatorial election in the state. It was Obasanjo, in collusion with INEC officials, that rigged the election in Amosun's favour. I believe that is one of the reasons for his callous behavior. He must have felt the people didn't acknowledge his first term performance in office by giving their votes to Isiaka.

As regards the 2019 governorship election, Amosun will never support Yayi as his successor. Yayi ought to have been the senator representing Ogun West in the red chamber, but Amosun frustrated his political moves. That's why Tinubu recalled him to Lagos and gave him the Lagos Central senatorial ticket. Amosun, most definitely, will want to pick his successor. I don't know whom he has in mind but my mind tells me it is the current SSG, Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa.

I see the current crisis rocking the PDP in Ondo state happening in both the APC and the PDP in Ogun State soon. There are too many political gladiators in both parties who all want to occupy the Isale Igbeyin Governor's House.

Well , i still stand on it that amosun won the 2015 election . I will tell you why because I monitored the last elections.

Amosun's major support has always been from ogun central senatorial district. Which comprises three of the most populated local government in the state I.e ifo local government, obafemi owode and abeokuta south local government.

Ogun central senatorial district delivered fully for APC in 2015. Ogun central detest anything PDP and considering the State of roads in abeokuta before 2011 which made the alake of egba land to voice out and what otunba gbenga Daniel told alake of egbaland that he will banish the king from the state. Most Egbas felt insulted by pdp's neglect for the capital. If you will remember very well, prior to 2011, ogun State was largely unsafe, especially in abeokuta, you have to be indoors by 7pm, lots of kidnapping were going on in the state which many felt pdp were behind those crimes.
Have you forgotten alhaji Hakeem ologbonwo whom pdp used to terrorised us. Amosun came, he spent lots of money on security, he closed Mko Abiola stadium in the night which was used for kidnapping later he re opened it .

All these things made ogun central senatorial district people to vote amosun and detest anything pdp. other one is that amosun comes from ogun central senatorial district.

The decider for that election was ado odo Ota local government, the aworis.

The aworis detest pdp more than the egbas , even though they fall into the ogun West senatorial district which has never produced the governor before. But the truth is the awori's are different from the yewas.

Ado odo Ota gave amosun the deciding votes to win the election after having won the central senatorial overwhelmingly. Amosun knew he can't win yewa, so he knew he needed the ijebu zone votes to be tight even if he will lose there too. Pdp won in the ijebu zone but it was tight.

Kashamu knew the election in ijebu will be a tight one, that was why he distributed cash on the election day. He needed to secure his own zone with his own money which he did.

I still find it difficult to believe that obasanjo and amosun could have rigged the 2015 governorship election in ogun state despite pdp enjoying federal might in the state and kashamu had the support of Jonathan

I guess you meant when Obasanjo was President. Yes, that may be somehow true but remember he dualized the road in the first place so it may not be entirely true....

Thanks for the correction, o jare! Yes, I meant when he was President. As for the dualisation, it started before Obasanjo's time. And traffic on that road was an eyesore before the dualisation, during the dualisation and even till now after the dualisation. There are so many failed portions and bad spots on that road. From Agege bus-stop to old Toll-gate junction at Iyana Otta can take you 2-3 hours on a good day during the week. And this is a distance of 7 kilometres oh. sad
