Why We Suspended Judges Accused Of Corruption – CJN by PMBNG(op): 7:00pm On Nov 07, 2016
THE Chief Justice of Nigeria Mahmud Mohammed, on Monday said the Judiciary remained resolute and committed to upholding its independence.

The CJN said this on the occasion of the swearing-in of Amina Augie and Ejembi Eko as justices of the Supreme Court in Abuja.

Mohammed said all courts in the country were empowered to adjudicate with utmost fairness and justice as prescribed in the Constitution and the law.

He said: “Certainly, the decision of the National Judicial Council at its last meeting reflects our desire to preserve this independence.

“Hence, we proclaimed to the world that any judicial officer that is standing trial will cease to perform judicial functions.

“The Council took this stand following communications it received from the Attorney General of the Federation that he was embarking on the prosecution of the affected judicial officers for the offences disclosed against them.

“We must not forget that we operate a constitutional democracy, which clearly prescribes the powers accorded to each organ of the State.

“I therefore wish to state without fear of contradiction that the third arm of government will remain resolute in its commitment and resolve to uphold its independence.”

On his advice to the new justices, Mohammed urged them to continue to be diligent in the discharge of their duties.

He said: “You must remain blind to personality and status and remain the hope of all men, whether common or uncommon.

“Hence, the integrity and impartiality of our courts must not be in question or compromised.

“I am confident that with the institutions and initiatives that we have put in place, the Nigerian judiciary will evolve to meet the high standards demanded by our citizens.”

Eko, before his appointment, was a Justice of the Court of Appeal.

He also served in the High Court of Justice, Benue State Judiciary between 1989 and 2007.

Eko, from Benue State, obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), Law/Jurisprudence from the University of Ife, Ile-Ife in 1976.

On her part, Augie, until her elevation to the apex court, was a justice of the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division.

Re: Why We Suspended Judges Accused Of Corruption – CJN by SoNature(m):
Good move. Any judge accused of bribery and corruption MUST step down OR be stripped off his/her position.

If after litigation and the judge is cleared of any wrongdoings, then (s)he MUST be reinstated with all entitlements paid to him/her.

In the Western world when political office holders are accused of corruption, they step down to clear their names. But Africans will never do that!

Anyone who doesn't like the decision of NJC should go and hug a 5000kva transformer! We must get it right in this country!

No real why, they were suspended because the evidence against them was damn too weighty, & rather than have them capsize the ship of una corrupt empire, (& the public backlash too) overboard they must go....

“The Council took this stand following communications it received from the Attorney General of the Federation that he was embarking on the prosecution of the affected judicial officers for the offences disclosed against them.
Hopefully the cows that have been mooing about persecution cos of Dasuki, Kanu etc, --especially the most foolish ones that were rejoicing about the c0ck & bull story sold to them that the CJN berated the president-- will have no other choice but to kip kwayet now. cool

According to him, the NJC took the new stand, “following communications it received from the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice that he was embarking on the prosecution of the affected judicial officers based on the evidence on the ground.”

I still don't see how these statement could be translated to mean the NJC was confronted with evidence against the judges!!!! The vanguard headline was very very misleading.

Please someone should show that corruption loving iPod yoot and his comrades who liked his ignorant comment this:

The CJN, who disclosed this while swearing in two new Justices into the Supreme Court bench, yesterday, said the NJC, which previously insisted that the Judges would not step aside as requested by the NBA, changed its position AFTER IT WAS SHOWN "EVIDENCE ON THE GROUND"
Even though it's coming from their preferred media, they still would toss it aside since they simply cannot but support corruption wherever it exists.

Tufiakwa.

Who did this to you people??
