While preparing to write this article I decided to check on-line to see if anybody had written such about the police force; I was in-fact motivated to write on when I discovered that 'The Tribune' in its publication on 30th August, 2016 writing under the title "The Police is Your Friend" wrote "a phrase that was created with the aim of dissipating the fears and misconceptions of the general public about the police force has more or less diminished into a hilarious irony". That was Tribune. So, is the police MY friend? here are my Top 5 reasons why they are not. No 5:- My Experience as a Young Boy. As a young boy leaving with a then public figure and having police escorts allocated to him, I grew up playing with police men - it was fun until this fateful day when one of the sergeants noticed that someone had scripted some jargons on their duty rooster and hand over note; na there wahala come ooh. I was his suspect but well, I didn't commit the 'crime'. While all attempt to get me to 'confess' and mine attempt to get him to believe I didn't deface their note failed he looked at me and pointed to the NPF logo on his uniform and asked - do u know what this means, off-course; Nigerian Police Force. He said no! It means 'No Police Friend'. I weak, infact as the little boy wey I be then; I fear. No 4:- My Experience Back in Bariga. Hmmmm; this Bariga police worry sha, it was common practice to see police van come into the neighborhood in-fact it was a welcomed development, but how do we explain when police men arrest two friends sitting in front of their parents house at about 8-9pm, because according to them they were opposite sex (a male and female) - is there a law that stops neighbors sitting together in from of their house to kill the heat as a result of PHCN's failure to provide light. Well, just in-case you're wondering - NO!, it wasn't me but my neighbors. No 3: My Experience in Okitipupa. As an Architect and Site Supervisor, I remember once I had to work on a project in Okitikuta, Ondo State. It was one of those small new generation bank branch, we had no choice but stack materials on a portion of the road. On this fateful day, the men of the Nigeria Police Force drove to site, parked in a hurry and started chasing people who suddenly tried to run from the shock. I remained calm thou, they eventually got a number of us to follow them to the station. We were asked to write a statement, and we made it simple. I put a call through to my boss and using his connection with a higher officer, he got us released but not without locking one of my boys in their cell. The good news is Oga settled boys in cash, saying he preferred to pay us for the uncomfortable state they put us through than settle them. He didn't pay any kobo. Na just one call do am. No 2:- My Experience as a learner driver. As a learner driver, I had just got a fairly used BMW from my then boss, and I started learning around my neighborhood - back at Bariga those days, on this fateful day a police van was behind me and as a learner driving a manual gear meant the car with off on you occasionally - The police van suddenly pulled me over and alas I was happy to see a police friend (supposed friend to my senior brother) - on seeing me he said ooh na you, greeted and allowed me drive off..... WAIT FOR IT; some minutes later they drove pass me again and pulled up beside me, accused me of tracking them, and queried why my car was always switching off in front of them, I looked at 'My Friend' face; he just 'throwey' eye - NA SO I LAND FOR POLICE STATION OOH; I called my brother that his friend had arrested me but once case don reach that level - You Know Now "NPF" - No Police Friend. A few thousands were paid to bail me and my car; even when I had a learners permit. No 1:- SAS comes Visiting. A day I'll love to forget. This happened in Ado-Ekiti, we were building another branch of a new generation bank and unfortunately our agent had rented a house belonging to a former Motor Park Chairman for us. On this fateful day, we were awoken in the middle of the night by gun and cutlass carrying men (we would later find out they were men of the special anti-robbery squad (SAS)). The story was they came looking for the former park chairman who had threatened the new park chairman, on getting to his flat and he not being around, they checked his tenants apartment (our apartment) and finding so much guys in the house, we became suspects. This one is a long story, a story for another day but as the leader of the team, I and our company driver were taken away. I was released early the next morning to discover that I have to walk bare foot back home because they didn't allow me wear any footwear the previous night and it was too early for shops to open so I could buy any. So let me ask you again, IS THE POLICE MY FRIEND? culled from www.palmchatnow.com

i have fallen into police net severally, but the worst was the day someone snatched my laptop and ran away, i screamed as we ran after him, fortunately for us, we caught him.. people around have already started lynching him, i was begging so they wont kill him, that he should be taken to station. funny enough, on getting to station they collected my laptop as evidence(exhibit), the next morning before i could come around 10am, the boy(thief) has been released with money, the IPO incharge of my case said i must bail my laptop too for 15k, i think say nah play oh.. i no know when i start to they beg for 8k... finally out of fear and what the IPO started saying, i paid the 8k and regreted why i did not support the JUNGLE JUSTICE METHOD. ------------------------------------------------------- Another day i wont forget in a hurry is the day i bought stolen fone unknown to me, the DCO of the station handling the case happen to be my senior padi, i buy him drink if we go flex, i give him fone&wine every end of the year.. my phone rang that sunny morning, it was his number, we greeted well, and he demanded to see me that the phone i bought is in case, so i should come to the station and return the phone so i can collect my money from the boy, on getting thier, its thesame DCO that slapped me first and said "this is the useless criminal".. it took me like 15mins to believe i was not dreaming, he handed me over to one wicked Mr Onee, SARS toture me to the point i started saying things i did not do, i was later transfered to area 1 abuja, bfore my elder bro called his boss who was a governorship candidate in delta then, nah only call and 25k bring me come out, i had to celebrate my freedom with friends sef, since then, if i see police, my belle go just they turn me..! so get it straight.. police is not your friend AND bail is not free..! |
