I Need Advice On Starting A Frozen Chicken Business by kayo80(m): 4:22pm On Nov 12, 2016
Hello good people of the Agric section of Nairaland. I need some advice on the next step in my chicken business. I want to go into sale of frozen chicken, but not the imported ones...I am going to be killing the chickens myself, and freezing them. I plan to do this with Noilers in their thousands. Noilers tend to be more fleshy than Cockrels, and tastier than broilers, so that is why I am going with Noilers. I plan to raise at least 2 thousand Noilers a month, and then start another 2 months the next month, and then continue that way. So that, every single month, I will have 2 thousand Noilers to sell as frozen chicken.

I plan to get a lister generator that can carry at least 4 deep freezers. Each deep freezer would contain at least 25 or more frozen chicken. The cost of raising a single Noiler from day old to maturity is 800 Naira (my own experience). I have not made up my mind on how much I would be selling the whole frozen chicken yet, but I am sure there is a lot of profit to be made here. Please, I need some input from experts.

It's better you raise broilers for frozen chicken business.

Bro, u are inside my head from A to Z. Noilers and all inclusive.
I will sue u for stealing my idea cheesy grin

Anyway, it is a wonderful plan. My only reservation is power. I heard that most generators can't really freeze ur produce. It can only help retain its frozen state when PHCN power freezes it. If at all it will freeze, it will take about 24 hrs of constant running to freeze it completely.
My brother, diesel is N200 a litre. I have a diesel generator in my house. To run it for 12 hours a day, I use up not less than 10litres.
Before u realise it, if phcn decides to be their default setting, ur N800 per bird cost of production will become N1400 per bird.
I will suggest that, if u live in the north or areas with lots of sunshine, consider investing in DC freezers and solar power.
All said, the business is good if u can overcome the problem of power. Generators don't just cut it. At least not for 1000birds a month turnover.

Noilers need four months to mature. What are your reasons?

pls when u find a way around it, do let me know.
u can partner with slaughter houses (abattoir) they always have cold rooms.
U can also partner with large coldroom operators to help u sell or to store ur chicken in their cold room for a fee.
Finally u can seek out a couple of other guys needing cold room services and u guys can come together to build one and share the operation costs.

with good planning and breeding in batches, if he has the space, he can still do noilers very comfortably and get 1000 birds every month.

She was joking and it is funny to me... And it will be hard work and a very ambitious project especially for someone who has just raise about 102 birds. I think 1000 birds per month is too many; how about 100-200 to start and then expand?

He needs to research the market - possibly he should have a contract with a buyer before starting... And then there is the Labour cost involved and the need for constant electricity.

Do ordinary Nja like to buy frozen chicken?

Because of their resistant to disease and zero mortality.

But if you raise broilers from a good farm with good management on your side, you could have zero mortality too. I have raised 102 broilers and 77 broilers for about 10 weeks without mortality.

As Experts in the field of poultry processsing, you will need a defeathering machine, to remove the feathers of the birds after slaughtering. Call us on 08182538752.

Hi brother first of all Happy new month.
Regarding to your question (I am speaking as an Energy Auditor n poultry owner) the power supply is the major challenge for you to be competitive in the market but I would advise you to consider starting with small birds before thinking of doing thousands of birds. It is easier said until you venture in to it if proper care is not taking it can paralysed your savings. Have a blissful day

this is the best advise i have seen in this thread, and personally, i think you should go for broilers, because of the timing metrics and cost implication of noilers.

Mr farmer, you have a good plan but it will be too cumbersome for you to start everything at once. take it step by step.

first of all, you should reconsider your choice of using noilers, I believe broilers are better because they can attain average of 1.5kg between 6 to 8 weeks and their meats are tender when compared to noilers. then most customers don't just buy any meat, they request more of broilers. noilers are usually preferred by suya sellers. but if the noilers is OK for you, then go for it.

if you are thinking of buying Lister generator, then you don't need 4 freezers(whattttt?). you need a cold room which will be more efficient and cheaper than 4 freezers, the cold room in my farm can still retain chicken for up to 48 hours before thawing.

as for your source of electricity, you need to be wise because it may drain your whole profit(at this point you need a feasibility study). but if your business location has regular power supply, then you are good to go.

finally you don't need cold room before you can start. you can start supplying based on request by whole sellers. if you are raising the birds yourself, then raise them in batches of 200 to 300 birds with spacing of 2 to 3 weeks between the batches. this is to enable you control your distribution and profit from each batch. raising a large number may result in spoilage if you don't sell them within the stipulated time.

at this point Sir, I rest my case.

It sound that you get proper understanding of new idea you about to introduce into agro market.

The only think I think you forget is cost of diseal to generate electricity for your farm or freezen your product. You need to put this in place too.

Thank for good idea
