bejeiodus:why didnt they in subsequent coups pounce on civilians after rounding up the coup plotters as was done in counter coup of 1966? |
| Re: Eight Great Events That Led To The Nigerian Civil War by Noneroone(m): 9:30am On Nov 19, 2016 |
agabusta:Ironsi did not abolish regions. The three regions were intact. It was gowon who arbitrarly desolved the federation and created new state without any referendum what so ever as. Infact he declared nigeria a unitary state which effectively started the war. |

Noneroone:The soldiers didn't kill civilian politicians. Nzeogwu and his band of rebellious soldiers stretched their hands too far by killing Northern political-cum-spiritual leaders. If they had simply executed their colleagues in the army, the civilian population would not have reacted the way it did. |

bejeiodus:i dont blame you. Many people will think you are lying while in reality you many actually not know the truth considering the standard of education in nigeria and the delibrate relegation of history as a subject in school curriculum. Soldeirs took active part in the pogrom in northern and western regions massacering civians which gowon admitted when he said "there was no basis for unity". |

Noneroone:I have read a lot of literature on the civil war and the issues that led to it to be able to form independent opinions. One thing that rang true throughout my intellectual search for reasons for the war was the fact that there would have been no reactions if there were no actions on the night of January 15, 1966. |

bejeiodus:you read so many books and only one thing rang through your mind. That is reductionism. |

Noneroone:Were intact but spineless? And everybody reports to the central govt. What is the difference?? Gowon only broke them down to more manageable units. Don't let us deceive ourselves, Gowon merely completed what was already started by Ironsi. The unitary system started from Ironsi. Don't try and paint it what it's not, and then jump to Gowon to give him all the blames. |
| Re: Eight Great Events That Led To The Nigerian Civil War by Noneroone(m): 12:08pm On Nov 19, 2016 |
agabusta:you just agreed with me that ironsi left the regions intact but gowon broke it down thereby violating the federal structure. Other things you are talking are not relevant |
| Re: Eight Great Events That Led To The Nigerian Civil War by agabusta: 12:29pm On Nov 19, 2016 |
Noneroone:Oga the first person that violated the Federal Structure is Aguiyi Ironsi with his decree. That decree of his which collapsed the entire Federal structure was seriously despised by the northerners. I don't understand why you guys like re-writing history. All of a sudden, you are claiming it's Gowon that collapsed the Federal structure. Haba. You people should fear God na. Ironsi decree is now non-existent right? All other actions which resulted in the balkanization of the regions followed the pace set by Ironsi. The regions may be existing, but they were just like states, and reporting to the central govt. End of story. |

sarrki:Why should we be united? Because Lord Lugard came from Britain to tell you that we are all Nigerians? You should have asked your African neigbours if this is true rather than beliving the white man from Europe |

agabusta:You're not saying how things happend in the right sequence. Lets say Ironsi came in and introduced the unitary system, a counter coup followed which made Gowon head of state. The constitution only reconized 4 Regions. Gowon called for a constitutional conference to discuss the way forward. The conference fell apart due to the widespread massacres that were happening at the time. In a last ditch attempt to find peace, Gowon meets with the 4 Regional military Governors in Ghana. They all agree that Nigeria should become a confederation of 4 Regions with a very weak center in Lagos. The agreement also provides that if Gowon wants to make any major decision in Nigeria, he must seek the permission of all 4 Military Governors. They all sign this agreement. 6 Months later, Gowon unilateraly abolishes the 4 Regions without consulting anybody as stated in Aburi. Ojukwu then convenes the Eatern Nigeria consultative forum on the way foward. They tell him that since Gowon has broken the terms of Aburi, he (Ojukwu) should declare the Eastern Region a separate country. Ojukwu declares Biafra and war followed. |

6. July 29, 1966 Northern Counter-Coup Decree Number 34 of May 24, 1966 promulgated by Ironsi was the beginning of the end for him. The decree made the centre strong, thereby abolishing the powers granted to the regions. Interestingly, Nzeogwu, in an interview he granted in 1967, affirmed that Ironsi shot himself in the foot with that decree. The truth yeeeboowls do not want to admit. Now, we know who abolished regionalism and made the centre too powerful for ethnocentric and selfish reasons. I Before Others. |

Noneroone:The Federal Government and Biafra fought for control of the oil in the Niger Delta oil rich region. The FG won while Biafrans cried wolf and are still crying. Myndd44 front page material |

Noneroone:But the minorities were happy...why cry more than the bereaved. Put up any link that shows that the minorities did not support the balakanization. |

coptic:I was not fed any lies. You really need to do a research on how and why the civil war began, then you'd realize that Gen. Ojukwu called for the cessation of Viagra as an independent nation from Nigeria happened when the massacres of Igbo ethnicity began. He wanted what was good for his people and unfortunately the other tribal leaders realizing that the oil rich states are included in the so-called Biafra didn't want that to happen. Do u really believe that if the oil was in the northern province, that the civil war would have happened? Read up and research, then think and conclude. But one thing is true, you're right in your assumption of where my problem actually lies. |
