Nigeria's U20 women captain Sandra Chichi says the Falconets are still on course to reach the quarter-final of the U20 Women's World Cup after defeating Canada 3-1 on Wednesday.

Goals from Chinasa Uchendu, Joy Bokiri and Chinwendu Ihezuo ensured Peter Dedevbo's ladies secured a comeback victory against the North Americans at the Bava Park, Port Moresby.

"We're happy with our performance. We did better than our first game and very glad about our victory today [Wednesday]," Chichi told Goal.

"I believe in my teammates. We are not under pressure to do well despite the defeat in our first match. This victory will help us play well in our next game.

"The confidence I have in my team is because almost all of us have tasted the World Cup. We know the kind of players we have and everyone here is determined to make Nigerians proud.

"Our target is to reach the next round after we made the finals last time in Canada. Nigerians are expecting a lot from us and we are not losing hope but want to give our best.



"In our next match, I'm very confident that we will win and qualify through the prayers and support of Nigerians."

Nigeria U20 Women’s coach Peter Dedevbo has insisted that his girls must brace up for their game against Spain.

The Falconets defeated Canada 3-1 at the ongoing Fifa U20 Women’s World Cup, after losing 6-0 to Japan in their first game.

And the tactician, who praised his girls for their victory against Canada, claimed there will be no margin for error against Spain on Sunday.

"After every game, we go back to x-ray our areas of weakness and strength. The match against Canada was very challenging but I am happy with the eventual outcome,” said Dedevbo.

“To progress in this tournament, we need to toughen up for the last match against Spain and I believe that God will grant us success.

"We are going to work on all the departments of the team from defence to attack. The fact that we defeated Canada does not imply that the team is hundred percent compact.

"I am proud of how the girls were able to come from behind to win the match. Spain no doubt is a good team, they defeated Japan, a team that scored six goals against us, which means that we must step up our game.”
