These are not the best of times for members of the National Assembly, as commercial banks have launched fresh moves to recover billions of naira from lawmakers spent during last year’s elections.
Lawmakers, particularly returnee Senators and Reps, are battling to stop moves by some commercial banks to repossess their properties, following their inability to pay back loans used in prosecuting their elections.
Findings by Ripples Nigeria show that some of the affected Senators are predominantly from South-south, South-east and few states from North-central and North-east. It is believed that they secured huge sums as high as N300 million to secure their party’s tickets and for campaign purposes.

Why would banks lend more to politicians than businessmen??

Politicians are lone liabilities on the nations lean purse but get loan easily while businesses are shutting down daily due to capital investment...!

That's what I voted for... the parliament as presently constituted is a huge drain on our resources anyways, so good riddance to bad rubbish.

While purchasing the N25 million nomination form at the party’s national secretariat yesterday, Buhari lamented the high cost of the nomination form, but said that he was fired by his ambition to procure a bank loan through the assistance of an unnamed bank chairman earlier yesterday.

Nothing like overdraft here and all must be repaid anyways whether loan or overdraft.

Femi Falana also raised issues about said loan:

Lagos based lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana, SAN, has strongly condemned the former head of state and presidential aspirant, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for obtaining a loan of N27.5m to buy his party’s expression of interest and nomination form for the 2015 election.

Falana, who spoke on Thursday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, while speaking at the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Paramount FM Chapel Press Week, noted that the action of the elder statesman was vulnerable, noting that it lead to monetization of politics.

He said, “It is indefensible for Gen. Buhari to have obtained a loan facility of N27.5m just to obtain a form of intent to contest in the presidential election in 2015 under the All Progressives Congress.

“Is he going to obtain another loan during his campaign, because in Nigeria, it costs billions of naira to run a presidential campaign?”
