In real context ex should mean botched out while former means the tenure had finished. Have you ever heard of former girlfriend?

Ex is the short form of 'Expired' before tenure ended former is the tenure ended. Ex girlfriend (Expired girlfriend) Fmr President (Former President). Shey you get?
