The problems associated with genotype and marriage is the genotype of the children from the marriage.
When People with hemoglobin “ AS” are pregnant, they have 50% chances of having a child with “AS” genotype , 25% chances of having a child with AA genotype and 25% chances of having a child with SS genotype.
The answers to knowing the genotype of the child before it is born is the solution to the problem.
At the fetus stage chroronic villi sampling test can be done, which are carried out on the tinny parts of the placenta that are formed from the Fertilized egg at about 11th-14th week during the gestational period.

yes, there is and it's at Lagos

Op, yea prenatal diagnosis techniques are readily available especially in developed countries and are gaining entrance into developing countries like Nigeria, but how many can afford it? So to say that AS can marry AS without fear is rather misleading.

Prenatal diagnosis, vis a vis chorionic villous sampling (CVS) only diagnoses, it does not treat, so if SS is diagnosed, then what next? Are you going to terminate the pregnancy? (remember abortion is illegal in Nigeria as at today) or she carries it to term and deliver an SS baby.... imagine the psychological trauma you subjected her to by giving her a false hope, not to talk of the expenses you made her incur.

Prenatal diagnosis has revolutionized the practice of obstetrics globally, however adequate counselling is paramount to get the best out of it, especially what to do when the outcome is not palatable.
