Standing trial for 'treasonable felony' and 'acts of terrorism'

Justice dismisses defendants' claims that president Buhari openly asked for them to be denied bail

Leader of the Indigenous people of Biafra(IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, had his bail application denied again today. Kanu and three others, David Nwawuisi, Benjamin Madubugwu and Chidiebere Onwudiwe, were all denied bail by Justice Binta Nyako at the federal high court in Abuja today, December 1st.

The defendants are facing an 11 count charge bordering on acts of terrorism and treasonable felony. In seperate bail applications submitted through their lawyers, the defendants pleaded that the court release them on bail which will aid them to properly defend the charges.

The bail applications were predicated on sections 158, 162 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act of the amended 1999 constitution. A lawyer representing the federal government, Mr. Labaran Shuaibu, told the court that the defendants would constitute “a threat to national security” if freed from prison custody. He prayed the court to let the accused persons stand trial from prison custody adding that one of the defendants, Chidiebere Onwudiwe was a serious threat as he was the only one person facing the 'terrorism' charge.

Nyako also dismissed claims made by the defendants that Nigeria's president, Muhammadu Buhari had openly directed that they should not be granted bail. Nyako cited that the president, being a citizen of Nigeria, had freedom of speech and could express his opinions openly.

Na 2 years Buhari spent for inside ikoyi prison when he overthrew shagari's government and ibb come overthrow him.
