Live: Horror as Russian ambassador to Turkey is shot dead at art gallery in Ankara by policeman screaming: 'Allahu Akbar... We die in Aleppo, you die here' as US warns 'security incident' is ongoing at their embassy nearby.



The Russian ambassador to Turkey was shot dead by a off duty Turkish police officer at an art gallery in Ankara tonight.

Ambassador Andrey Karlov, 62, was repeatedly shot in the back at close range by a gunman shouting: 'Allahu Akbar (God is Great). We die in Aleppo, you die here!'

The shooter has been named on social media as Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş, 22, an off-duty police officer from the Ankara special forces department.

The fatal attack follows days of protests in Turkey over Russia's role in Syria.

Meanwhile the US Security Department reported an 'ongoing security incident' outside the US Embassy in Ankara, near to the gallery where Mr Karlov was shot.

The horrific scene was caught on camera by journalists at the gallery to cover the exhibition.

Mr Karlov (right) was about to give a speech at an art exhibition when the gunman burst in and began firing at him, shouting about the situation in Aleppo.

Turkish police arrived at the scene of the shooting and are believed to have gunned down the ambassador's assassin.

the planned meeting will go on as shcedule to show Rusia resilience and Turkey with count their loss too later. Just a bad day for Rusia after a plan crash that killed scores of their military men.

When a diplomat is murdered over politics it is an attack on all of us. He was serving his country. Whether we agree or disagree with him, he paid the ultimate price a public servant can make. RIP.

First a Russian jet was gunned down over Turkish airspace, a failed coup, and now an "arranged/staged" assasination of a Russian diplomat?
