Forsyth was a Biafran sympathiser his writing cannot be unbiased. Not only that, Forsyth had no clue what was in other regions since his stay was exclusive to Biafra, therefore he had no idea that the amenities and attributes he embellishly glorified were not sub-par to the true and independently acknowledged developments in other regions of that period.

Moreover, if we are going to refer to books and authors, to your one Frederick Forsyth, there are hundreds of books, magazines, documentaries that showcase the greatness of achievements in the Yoruba West. Pa Awolowo himself made a declaration pre-independence and infront of European press corps that in just ten years he had provided for his region and people what the white colonialists had capacity but failed to do in their one hundred years presence. After that he invited the press corps to go around and see for themselves. This is how the world knew of the FIRSTs of social and urban infrastructures in Yorubaland. The world was awed!

Lets put writings aside. How is it possible places like Kano, Kaduna, Lokoja, can have pictures showing their cities, towns, villages and dated pre-war era but you in East have none. Very baffling.

You will need Yoruba to ground you so you can think straight and steer away from pending doom as you Think Home.

I do not have to go to University of anywhere or any museum to see developments of other regions in their pre-war state. Why are you prescribing a visit to a museum to see what your region was like, are there no online sites where the collections are available?

Ikpeazu captured some but not all the factors that created deficits and detriments in Iboland.

When there is conflict between two opposing forces you bring in a mediator to use truth and reconciliation to address grievances and seek a middle way to reset and restart relations and restore peace. Truth and reconciliation as a tool for peacemaking is equally useful for intra- ethnic divisions as is the case with Iboland.

Your leaders have spent decades looking in the wrong direction for what troubles you. You have fundamental cultural beliefs that is out of alignment with the inherited system of governance left to this nation by colonial Britain.

In addition to the fundamental cultural difference, you were also at a disadvatage in the choice of Zik as your representative leader.

These two pointers are at the root of your problem. Other issues that Ikpeazu mentioned are just surface events and offshoots from incompatibility of your culture and leadership into the system and style of governance established for the sovereingty.

This is not to say other regions have a perfect startup, but it is worth noting that a continuity was possible for them when sovereingty transitioned from colonial leadership to indigenous leadership and their learning curve was very small because their cultures and traditional statehood had served as headstart all along. In fact for Yoruba specifically the colonial system was a retrogade from its traditional customs of state rulership and check and balance for urban evolution and state civilization.
Awolowo proved this politically and socially. Babaramota already alluded to that fact where Awo confronted the colonial Governor and charged him with incompetency.

For instance all the contemporaries of 50s and 60s youth leadership schooled in England, exception was Zik, who schooled in America.

Zik could find culturally compatible sentiments in the American system of governance where no central authority or monarchy exists.

His peers in Yorubaland and Hausaland found culturally compatible society in England. They saw the system they inherited as one and the same with their ethnic society. For Zik on the other hand there was clash of values. He could not reconcile Ibo society into the greater Nigeria. This aspect played into the push for forceful takeover and reshape of the whole country from ground up.

Another factor in the fundamental problem is the custom and beliefs in birthrights. The diala can buy land and attain community or clan leadership and can represent the community and marry freely....the osu is forbidden from any of these privileges of birth. When it dawned on osus that in Yorubaland they are equal to dialas and no one here forbids them anything or set no-go limits on them, plus the fact Yorubaland is a land of milk & honey....they abandoned their condemned life in Iboland sought refuge in Yoruba. Many of them rose to prosperity and far above their freeborn peers. This factor alone drained Iboland of headcount faster than anything else.


As you plan a resettlement (that guy was correct by callintg it resettlement, and im going to add to it...) and "rehabilitation" of Iboland, start thinking what it means and changes needed to make every Ibo a freeborn on your homeland. You also need to define and reassess if you want to remain as member in this culturally incompatible system of governance.
