We should go back to PHCN. Simple. All this excuses are very silly ones. The truth is that this discos were sold to family and friends, political associates and the likes, instead of competent firms who are experienced. Some of the owners of these discos are actually major importers of Generators and petroleum products.
Sentiments as usual. I can only reply objective arguments on the subject matter: why power is rejected. And for your information it is normal in the energy industry worldwide. You simply cannot take what you cannot use. If you are not making profit, you are in debt, the consequences of which are worse. Transysco should study the pattern and advice the GENCOS to trim output whenever uptake is weak if not, it is they who will go bankrupt.

Need to know the reason of rejection while the country is darkness. This country na zoo.
The reason is simple.
Any Disco that cannot reasonably and effectively metered the electricity it distributes will not be able to pay the Gencos and will just keep accumulating debt. The issue is worsened now with the fact that 1, estimated billing is becoming difficult to collect, 2, it's almost now illegal to disconnect owning customers.
The ultimate solution is to METERED ALL ELECTRICITY CONSUMERS.. Anything outside that will not work

Who will pay for the energy now ? This distribution companies are not making enough money because people are actually not paying for the energy consumed. The ones with prepaid meters will bypass this meters , the politicians and powerful people wont pay, the average nigerian cannot afford to pay for the energy they consume. It is well sha

I just dont understand. Some people are alleging that it is because they will still make their money from estimated bills. And they in turn will not pay for the rejected power.
Exactly what my friend told me when he visited on Xmas day.
We are our own problem. We have electricity once in a three week or a month in my area and it will not last more than 3 - 4 hours.
While i enjoy 16 - 24 hours electricity everyday in Abuja.

You are right on that. Some of them are already following this suggestion of yours. The prepaid metre installed in my house has a transmitter that transmit all activities on it directly to Eko Electricity Distribution company. Even if the cover is opened, a light comes up on its indoor unit and this is also transmitted to their office. They also installed the device high up an electricity pole. and covered the input and output cables to some extent. And stated that any tampering to the input and output cables will be transmitted to their office. I was even surprised to see that the meter uses a sim card.

This coupled with frequent inspections will reduce electricity theft to some extent. Unless there is sabotage on the part of their employees.

Consumers sabotaging the collective efforts of Disco, Transysco and Genco.

If consumers don't pay Discos, Discos can't pay Transysco or rather reject allocations, and with this Transysco can't pay Genco.

it all starts from Nigerians - consumers.
Those in the industry know how terrible the situation of electricity theft is which is worsening with he the recession. Admitted it is the responsibility of DISCOS to protect their investments and there are many suggestions and proposals out there on how to tackle the menace but to think they will just go on and on incurring losses without side effects is just foolhardy. We will get the service we are prepared to pay for. This issue amongst others is one of the big reasons, the big, global players watch from the sidelines, that is weak corporate governance, weak regulations, weak enforcement. If you stole a pack of recharge cards and you were caught you will be charged. On the other hand, have you ever heard anyone arrested by the police for stealing power. The worst you get is a disconnect, a small fine and a reconnect even if you have consumed a million naira worth of electricity. No business can run like that and yet we want stability while right billing covers just a fraction of consumers.

Not really, in fact, it will be better for them if people are properly metered. The more power they can deliver to metered households, the more efficient they get and more profitable they can get.

This is the technology that Ikeja Electricity distribution is deploying now, and those areas already deployed enjoy considerable amount of power daily.

But from the article, the DISCOS union denied rejecting the power allotted to them. In as much as consumers are part of the problem, the culture of estimated bill has generally encouraged them to steal power or refuse to pay their bills

As of now, meters won't favour the companies.
Without meters, the discos can generate a certain amount of money via estimated billings but if houses are metered and a pipeline is blown in the Niger delta, then the income for the discos isn't guaranteed.

Also without billing, you pay for low current but with smart meters, your account doesn't read with low current.

Outrageous bills most times to augment what's lost as a result of atc&c loss - mostly from consumers, Nigerians.

There is never a smoke without a fire.

You have a neighbour who uses over N10,000 worth of electricity per month, but pays a token of N2,000 due to bypassing. Where do you think the 8k dey?

Report that your neighbour, and the corrupt "NEPA" man who helped with the connection.

You are not getting the reason behind the rejection and you are therefore missing the point completely.
If the Gencos due to blown up pipelines cannot generate power, they won't be in a position to send any Invoice to the Discos for settlement.
If they are supplied with enough power and they know their cost, they only simply add the margin and bill the consumers for what they consumed, therefore the more power they can wheeled to people's houses, the better for them.

You need to know the value chain involve to understand the issues

Gas Producers ------> Electricity Generating Company ------> Transmission ------->Electricity Distribution Company ------>Household and Industrial consumers.

The Discos are more or less a collecting agent for the Gencos (for a fee)

The discos will not lose anything should they blown off pipelines. It is the gas company that will suffer.

The power problem in this country is multifaceted. It needs iron hand. Fashola seems inundated and too soft with these discos.

Mynd44, OAM4J, Lalasticlala please come and see this interesting report. Discos are turning down power supply despite that people are eagerly and prayerfully waiting to receive such electricity.

Something is definitely wrong somewhere with the power administration and management in this country.

Fashola does not control any thing under the power aspect of his ministry

If you get light for 3 hours or you get for 6 hours, your bill is most likely the same.
If I travel for 2 months, I'll still get a bill but if I had prepaid meter, if I travel for 2 months and everything is off, the disco makes no money from me.

Have you ever wondered why it's hard to get a prepaid meter? If it would help the discos don't you think they'll do everything to make sure every customer has one.

Why will they not reject electricity from the generating companies, when they can make money from estimated billing of customers, without having to pay the generating companies. This is the main reason the discos are refusing to provide smart meters to its customers.

Why will a consumer (not customer) bypass in the first place - we all see reasons we are still here!

Change starts with individuals.

Average Nigerians will want to cheat no matter how - it is in the blood.

Instead of Discos wasting money on more robust technology to check make meter bypassing by cheating Nigerians and Discos' staff, why can't the government pass a law against power theft and make it well renowned.
