Sentiments aside, 90% of people just sit down in their homes and pass a guilty verdict on the herdsmen. Yes there are stories about herdsmen allowing their cattle to trample upon farmlands and there are stories about herdsmen killing villagers but there are also stories about villagers hijacking cattle and killing them for meat and also villagers killing herdsmen over arguments. At the risk of sounding very very politically incorrect, I would say that much of the crimes committed against herdsmen go unreported and unpublicized while much of those committed by the herdsmen get publicized. Nevertheless the security guys must be more proactive to stop the killing of anybody. Anyone who kills in the name of herdsmen, farmers crisis should be hanged.

Is it only in Nigeria people rear cows? If you cannot solve the root cause of any problem forget it because that problem will come back three times stronger. The same way we treat issue of Niger Delta and the country at large. To solve any problem you must look into the origin of such crisis before making peace. Let the herdsmen rear cows in designated area or better still in their local compounds period.

This is why it is good to listen to both sides to a story. The secretary told their story and non of the comments above has shown any sympathy to their loses and this attitude is the general way Nigerians treat issues of attacks on the Fulanis. Attacks on the Fulanis largely go unreported by the Nigerian mass media. The secretary mentioned specific attacks on the Fulanis, the loses they have suffered as a result and measures they took to avert crisis but all all have been ignored. The people of southern Kaduna should take actions that are geared towards restoring peace to the area and not listen those calling for retaliation because if it comes to fighting the nomads clearly have the advantage.

Now you have raised a good and valid observation: why always Fulani? The answer to your question is that because they move in small numbers with their cattle (a huge fortune) people tend to take advantage of that and attack them. How is the forest a people's land? The forest where they graze their cattle is a common property of Nigerians. To the herdsmen retaliation for attacks on their brothers is a means to survival; they'll never stop it until they are no more attacked. They always make sure they are not the aggressors but when people take advantage of their isolation and attack them and efforts to get justice done in a peaceful way fail they retaliate in the most ferocious manner possible.

The good thing about democracy is that majority carries the vote; so the hateful minority like you will have to contend with living in their misery for another 2-3yrs till 2019, and possibly beyond.

You are 100% correct; the poor perception of the public for the herdsmen is the result of information mismanagement where one side has the loudest voice and ear of the public.

The media has woefully failed in giving factual and balanced report over the issue; they often invite only one side to discuss or relate opinions forgetting that there are always two sides to a story.
In this way, the herdsmen are always seen as the aggressors; while their nomadic lifestyle, poor education and lack of exposure lends them no voice and access to the media to counter such false claims against them.
The bias by the media is not surprising because majority of the houses are owned, manned and controlled by the largely Christian southerners who in turn have long established open hatred for the Hausa Fulani and Islam.

At the same time, political leaders are fanning the embers of hate and mistrust among the ppl through so many unguarded utterances and loaded speeches of hate as ethnic champions - in order to advance their selfish agenda.

It is unfortunate that we live in a country where some ppl are hell bent on disuniting it.
