Yes, I think he was one of the newscasters, but he was better known as a commentator on state events like independence day, remembrance day, etc. He was a master of that kind of commentary.

He would tell you the name of the parade commander's horse, the number of times it had been used for similar ceremonies (this is important so that it is not frightened by the sound of the artillery guns and air force jets) and just about everything about the event.

He was also an actor and he played many roles on For Better, For Worse.

Yes, I do remember watching re-runs of "For Better, For Worse," in the early '90s. I still believe that the newscasters and commentators of the past, did a much better job than their current counterparts. undecided

These days, you see people hosting shows or events, and mispronouncing or murdering the pronunciation of Nigerian names. Some cannot even decide which accent to adopt - British, American or Canadian? shocked Their speech comes out sounding garbled and unintelligible.

Taiwo Obileye had a brother in the industry too - I think his name was Yomi Obileye or something like that??

Taiwo Obileye is currently part of the cast of the TV series "The Governor," which shows on EbonyLife TV.

Sultty's response makes me even more convinced that it was a Telemovie.

Telemovie, just like Behind The Clouds, was produced in Jos and many of the people who later acted in Behind The Clouds also acted in the Telemovies.

The Telemovies were shown on either Saturday or Sunday night, while Behind The Clouds was shown on Sunday night.

Really? Forgive me Jare.. the names just plenty..Thanks. But how about that Frank Oliseh (a name of that sort) that was a newscaster then.. I think he featured mostly in NTA newsline.
naptu2:

grin You also made the same mistake that she made. All the people she mentioned, including Gringory and Clarus, are actually from the New Masquerade.

Isn't that "Papiluwe" or something like that?? That Lagos nawa movie??

jantavanta:

I doubt if anybody has uploaded it. It will be in NTA archives in U-matic format.

Who remembers another comedian Aluwe?

Frank Olize was an NTA News correspondent. He became very famous in 1983 when he went out on the streets to ask people, "Who is the common man?" (Nigeria had an economic crisis which started in 1982 and people were always referring to "the common man", "Can the common man afford this?", etc, so he went on the streets to ask people, who is this common man that everybody is talking about ).

He also did similar hilarious interviews on the streets and he became known for that.

In the early 1990s, he took over as host of Newsline. Newsline had started c1988 with Yinka Craig and Patrick Oke as hosts.

He left Newsline in the late 1990s or early 2000s and started Tuesday Night Live (Abike Dabiri took over as host of Newsline) and that was the last show that he presented on the NTA.

Thank you so much for this.. quite educating. I didn't know the " Who is the common man" part because I wasn't born then.. infact, I have never heard of it. But I usually watched newsline with my parents in the 1990s as a child. I also remember Yinka Craig, Abike Dabiri, Patrick Oke... and there was Ruth Benemesah Opia... there was also Sola or Sele Eradiri or so.. (maybe this is a more recent presenter..not too sure cos I no longer watch NTA... I will have to start watching newsline at least)

Sele Eradiri was the NTA's Port-Harcourt correspondent and she contributed a lot of stories to Newsline. She was to the NTA in the 1990s, what Frank Olize was in the 1980s. She had a way of finding weird, frightening and hilarious stories.

How will you forget the unforgettable Eugenia Abuh, co host with Ruth opia and Cyril Stuber who read the news before the main Newsline events.

You guys keep taking someone down nostalgia lane

I remember Ojo Ladipo but not Awada Kerikeri.

It's basically the same thing. The group was known as Ojo Ladipo Theatre Group, but Ojo Ladipo died in 1978 and the name of the group was changed to Awada Kerikeri sometime in the late '80s or '90s. But everybody called the show "Aluwe" because he was the star of the show.

Aluwe, Awero, Oga Bello and the light complexioned guy (I can't remember his name ) were all members of the Ojo Ladipo /Awada Kerikeri Theatre Group.

The light complexioned guy that I was trying to remember is Jide Kosoko. I still can't remember his screen name, but he was Bello and Aluwe's boss on the show.

Bros, I don't believe you!! wink You can't be 35. You are definitely over 40!! cheesy Even me wey be say na my bed dey beside the TV for our house dat time, I cannot remember most of these shows and lyrics you have reeled out here!! grin

I think the news caster that used to read the news with John Momoh was called Funmi Odubekun. Another one was Sola Adelehin who later became his wife. Siene All-Well Brown was also among them, as well as Tokunbo Ajayi and Ruth Benamaisia.

The reason I remember their names, was because these women were fashion icons in those days. Any outfit they wore on screen was bound to be copied the following week by the fashionistas of Lagos. cool My older aunties loved their outfits, and would always do a rough sketch of their clothes, for their tailors to cut and sew. cheesy We were too young to understand it all then, but I remember that my job was to find paper & pencil for my aunty to use in drawing these outfits, whenever these newscasters appeared on air. That my aunty, she broke all my 2B pencils in those days.... angry

You got me wrong, i said by the weekend they transform to LWT. LTV weekdays and LWT by weekend starts by friday Night. I was trying to remember Siene razak Lawal after she got married. NTA night was fun with the duo of late Yinka craig and patrick Oke on Newsline before frank Olizie took over sunday nite 9.00pm - 10pm. The used to call theirselves Hello ram and othe rreplied hello goat.

And for the lyrics i believe that i'm an addict cos i can still remember most of the lyrics on every program that i watched, just as a kid we love to sing along with every tv program and adverts. Do u remember 7up Highlife promo commercial, Thermocool, that ends with " see the 250 nigerias most popularly used fridge" thermocool makes things better make better things. or Vaseline, hello mr vaseline... thank you, or Heyyy Joy Girl no matter where u going.... u ve got that joy girl quality, i still remember nigeria at 25 commercial, or late Funsho Alabi's rap commercial on consumer goods, "Are u a distributor, a trader or consumer, do not buy anything if the price is high, there are alternatives of same quality of goods", You should remember kidi vision 101 in 1991 that introduced Denrele edun, Kiddi time for kiddi vision 101, kiddie time for me kiddies time for u", What about NTA 2 first commercial on their birth, "For the past one year NTA 2 has reach out to you, as a commercial station we hope u identify with us, celebrate with us as your reachout station is one"

I still remember the best movies that had the best effect with Fiery force by Jimi odumosu and this half cast guy. also "To save the Fallen Angel", Devil Encounter, Eretics, LINKS(cat) that dauda killed his wife from pot calling her name "hauwa hauwa" and Hauwa later turned to cat and started haunting Dauda to his death. Also Telest and Nifitep 87 which showcased some of this movies. I still have few more years to 40 i swear!. i guess i'm just a tv addict with good memory.

Much thanks Bros Naptu2. Choi. The short movie Ishilove talked about where a family was travelling to their village, their car broke down and they were later feasted on by witches sent a chill up my spine. Still can't remember the name though.

The Pot Of Life. I still remember the name of the lead character Amiuwu whose father was later beheaded... Bros is it true the series was banned by the Oba of Benin because the series painted the Benin monarch as bad?
