Its the only thing up there they can rest on, apart from trees, and they know they're in Nigeria so no big deal about electricity.

But in Ibadan with lot of trees, i still noticed the birds rather make use of electric poles instead of trees. Could there be a special reason?

Simply because its high up there without obstruction to their view. That's important to them, their view. There, they have better view of their surroundings than in trees and that means a lot to them. Its a cool place place for them to hang out for them.
