Of all the memories I have of growing up as a child, one that I recollect fondly and with a deep sense of appreciation for its lessons which now dawns on me but was at the time incomprehensible to my infant mind,is of lunch time back in primary school. My primary school had no class barrier, as you could find amongst it's students the haves and the have not. This divide was often noticeable by the extra flamboyance to the regular uniforms .A general rule of thumb being that the haves could afford to wear snickers and shoes whilst the have nots of which I was a fellow, made do with sandals. To instill a sense of brotherhood and belonging in all,the school authorities at lunch made all students take out their foods from home, and put it on the table of "equality" as it was called. On this table, there was no disparity between those who brought rice from home, and those who brought garri and dried fish or those who brought nothing.Irrespective of whether your mom prepared the choiciest meal or not, all was for naught as the teachers gathered all the food and shared it amongst the students without regards to who brought what. With the food redistributed, and with everyone having a reasonable share on his plate,we then raise our hands in surrender to God,and in a manner similar to thieves surrendering to policemen. We close our eyes as well and break out into a melodious tune titled" Some have food".With one voice we sing" Some have food but cannot eat, some can eat but have no food,we have food and we can eat,Glory be to almighty God".After the tune,we all sit at the table of equality and eat without regards to who brought what, and who brought naught......#MMI # MasterMind Initiative..... |

This was a time when I lived with reckless abandon.School was a place to have fun and let loose from the restrictions and "Oya get inside " of mum and dad.In the mornings I had to go through the routine of showing my teeth to mom for inspection as she didn't fully trust my tooth brushing skills.Till this day I can still hear her stern voice in my subconscious ."Adi brush your tounge as well, don't let your friends leave you due to bad breath".Upon passing inspection, I was allowed breakfast which usually consisted of bread and tea.The tea though very deficient in milk made up by being extra sweet. It felt as if mum was trying to say I am sorry we can't afford more milk but sugar is there at least in abundance. I usually liked soaking pieces of the bread in the tea before taking it in,but I had to do it stealthily to avoid mum's detection. As she called it,the act was"iyama"."Iyama" was Yoruba for disgusting.I always wondered how my mum a bonnifiede Hausa woman knew so many Yoruba slangs.Looking back now,the reason becomes very apparent.Lagos is a city in which to be successful or survive In, you had to embrace its culture, and traditions.Although a boiling pot of ethnicities the Yoruba majority meant that if you did not grasp the Yoruba language, fustration might drive you back to your origins..................... Ps: these are short memoirs from my childhood.Feel free to criticize and make suggestions...Will update if I get a sizeable following. .. |
