The problem you have is that you are psychologically disadvantaged. You seem to me like someone suffering from I-Complex. You know, atimes when people fail in something, the fear of subsequent failure grips them. You are currently harbouring in the neibourhood of failure. You don't have to allow your past failure dictate your pace in life. I'll recommend a therapy for you. Just look in the mirror and profess something good about the man in the mirror.

Actually, you really don't need no shrink. It's something you can do on your own
1. Take a break off studying. Travel for maybe a week to refresh your mind and brain
2. Don't read with fear of not understanding what your reading. Read with free mind
3. Try falling in love with your courses. The first step to failing is hating your course, lecturer or subject. The moment you lack interest in or hate a subject is the moment you signed to fail
4. Don't isolate yourself in class/lecture hall. It can actually cause lot of psychological problems. Mix with your course mates and try having group tutorials. It helps a lot.
5. Try not to think about the difficulty of any course. Ease yourself
6. Think less about unnecessary things.
7. Eat well. Lack of food during uni could actually cause distraction and depression

God help you

OP; this happens to every student at least once in academic life....

The point where the simplest point seems like quantum physics and even the simplest questions seems to be beyond your grasp....

It usually has a deeper psychological root; one that's so deep you might not notice it.

My advice is that you take a break; relax your brain; catch up on movies you've missed, read "fun" maths trivia and the like.

Then attack the topic again and you'll see miracles.

Worked for me while tackling Ordinary Differential equations and hyperbolic functions......embarassed grin

You said you were among the best in your secondary school, But didn't say if it was in sciences, social sciences or art related subjects.

If I should assume it was sciences, you have you no reason not to pick up in university as it would be a continuation of sorts with familiar terms.

Let me tell you a secret, I used to tell myself, "if I was among the top 10 in class in secondary school, making a 2.2 in university is a walk in the park."

Apply the same principle that put you among the best in secondary school, and you won't be far off the mark.

I know new found freedom with girls can be a serious distraction to over come

Besides, I will assume your village people are not on your case. grin

Hey People, I have to go straight to the point, I am a 200L student of a university in south-west Nigeria currently studing Industrial Physics. During my secondary school days I was among the best students in my set but All of a Sudden When I entered the University, It became like My Brain was blocked, I had to read and re-read some things before I understand a single concept and It's really taking a Toll on my GP.. Am currently considering dropping out of school to go and sort myself out. Please does anyone know the cause of my problems and Possiblr solutions. I know this isn't the right section but There's a wider audience here. Pls Lalasticlala you can move this to the appropriate section after some time
You are mixing up issues here OP, are you worried about your go or are you not understanding. If it is a GP, lemme reliably inform you that high grades and understanding are two ovjectives that usually run in different parts. The bottom line is to choose one or better still find a balance. High grades are a result of ding well in the C.A and in the exams both of which in turn are functions of your being able to do what you have to do. By this I mean past questions, high frequency cramming, good attendance etc. In fact I can assure you that 90 percent of students with high grades use a combination of past questions and just hand outs to get the job done. Often your syllabus is too wide, so passing is a just a game of if you can cover what the lecturer will set in the exams. Passing is also a function of your writing speed. Exams don't give you forever to write hence the need for the cramming. In other word, passing with high grades is a game in its own.

Understanding on the other hand ,is a different endeavour , which entails the expending of mental resources in a bid to assimilating the message being passed across. What I'm saying is , you may pass and not understand, and you may very well understand and not pass. This reminds of Ben Carson's book gifted hands I think he didn't pass much but in his language " he knew his material stone cold " meaning he understood it . I for one do not think you have a problem you are at the lower rungs of your education hence your knowledge base is wide and not necessarily deep so you struggling to grasp many new concepts fresh to you. With time those things will connect and form a body a knowledge and you will easily relate to them. If you were a student 40 years ago, you woukd be more interested in your final year GPA which gave you time to fully understand the knowledge before being graded on it. So try and solve your issues independently. Before you say your school is different and is too hard and I don't understand I attended the university of Ibadan. That should settle things.

Side note. Just try and learn what you can in the time you have whilst keeping in mind that you need a 2.1 at least to comfortably make thing happen. Life is hard out there for the 2.1 not to talk of 2.2. Again in Nigeria, pls forget those visions of intellectualism that propelled you here. There is nothing to teach you my brother, it's pass pass pass. In as much as you are gaining something whilst playing the pass game you are fine.

Have a nice day

@ op, I tink m encountering same issue as u describe. I av bin trying to diagnose d causes m so far I av narrowed it to d following.

1. fear- this may arise from so many uncertainties which may include: wat d future holds, especially in relation to course u ar studying, I am trying to conquer dis fear by not listening to pple hu say "no be certificate person take de make money"

2. worries- this arise from financial difficulty, lack of fud, clothing, home stress n d responsibility u may tink is already hanging on ur young shoulders especially if u ar among d eldest or wen d elder ones ar not doin too well n ur younger ones ar believing u will do better n come to dia aid, ur parents ar aging n de will soon need ur help n assistance. @ op if u av any of does tots I mentioned here, den I tink u ar on d path of redemption, des worries/ tot shud be a driving force; however u shud learn to discard dem at least once a while, give ursef a gud threat, find pleasure in d simple tins of life. for instance, I take pleasure in eating suya or fried potato, a hundred naira potato or 2 hundred naira suya gives me so much joy like craze.

3. women- I wudnt advise u in all honesty to stay away from women, I became very gud in academics wen I had girls in my class hu wants to spy from me during exams for a reward of lashing... I remember I was eagerly ready to do d hard stuffs so I cud get more lashing afta exams... d trick about dis is wen I moved to HND, dia was no single lady in my class, only big married women, I deteriorated d more cos I didn't get a motivating factor from women. @ op, if u can, pls stay away from women

4. friends- u need d brilliant ones to always make u feel incompetent n d dull ones to make u feel gud about ursef, u learn from d brilliant ones n u teach d dull ones wat u av learnt, but stay away from d troublesome ones n d lazy ones...

5. exercise- I noticed I started getting ugly n old, no exercise, but for abt 2 months now, I av bin doin 1hundred press up n 1000 skips every morning, I tink my confidence is gradually coming back, as I am looking trimmed.

6. sleep- one of my challenge is sleeping whenever I am studying, but I noticed I don't fall asleep wen m on nairaland, how m I conquering dis? I allow myself to fall asleep wen I am studying n once I awake, I resume d studying, in doin dis, I am playing a fast one on d demon dats making me fall asleep. lol

7. prayer n miscellaneous- pray, be attentive in class, stay away from noise wen reading.

I hope dis helps @ jay1f

Try to mix your reading with other modes of learning such as video tutorials.
Sometimes, visualisation is all you need to understand some difficult concepts.

You say you read but you do not understand and you have genuine interest in the subject

is it possible to put what you learn in class in some sort of practical after class?

Masturbation and pornography can be distracting
