President Adama Barrow of Gambia has pledged to ensure the smooth transfer of power to his successor when his tenure as president elapses.

Mr. Barrow in an interview with the Nigeria Television Authority, NTA, on Sunday night also explained why he allowed the former President, Yahya Jammeh o leave the tiny West African country.

He said his government decided to allow Mr. Jammeh leave the country, in order to ensure his (Jammeh’s) safety.

“We don’t want him to stay in the Gambia, because we cannot guarantee his security. The security situation in the Gambia is fragile. It’s a very difficult situation. And if you allow a former President to stay in your country, you have to guarantee his security.

“If you cannot guarantee his security, it will be impossible for us to keep him. That is why our stand is; let him leave to a foreign land. In the future he might come back if things settle down,” Mr. Barrow said.

Mr. Jammeh, who had led the country for more than 22 years, defied efforts by ECOWAS leaders to get him to step down from office having lost the presidential election. He disputed the elections a few days after he initially conceded defeat, citing widespread irregularities.

Balderdash. The only threat to his security would have been from you and your agents and no where else. All of Nigeria's ex Presidents live in Nigeria and they are even more secure than the common man. The fact is, you didn't "allow" him to leave, he chose to leave of his own accord in what many consider a very smart deal in a tight situation.

I think you are underestimating just how badly Jammeh is hated by Gambians in the diaspora who have the money to organize a serious attempt on his life. They have tried it before and may have more incentive to do so again now that he has less protection.

Also, Jammeh all along wanted to stay in his hometown of Kanilai where he has built a magnificent estate replete with his own personal zoo and armoury. What he wanted was to be allowed to retreat to kanilai with his own selection of officers from the Gambian army. So in fact, he was forced out.

You do realize that the reporter must have asked him a question like this "why did you insist that president Jammeh leave the country"?
