Born on the 21st of July 1944, Buchi Emecheta, the Nigerian trailblazing Novelist, passed on at the age of 72 in London.
The renowned Nigerian author has published over 20 books, including Second-Class Citizen, The Bride Price , The Slave Girl and The Joys of Motherhood.

Considered by many to be one of the most important female African writers, she is greatly respected and admired for her creative and narrative writing about African women's experiences in Africa and in Great Britain.
Here are 9 quotes from Nigeria's iconic literary figure:

1. “A man is never ugly".

2. “The leaves were still on the trees, but were becoming dry,
perched like birds ready to fly off.”

3. “A hungry man is an angry one.”

4. “I like to be called a Nigerian rather than somebody from
the Third World or the developing or whatever

5. "Being a woman writer, I would be deceiving myself if I
said I write completely through the eye of a man. There's
nothing bad in it, but that does not make me a feminist writer. I hate that name. The tag is from the Western world -
like we are called the Third World."

6. “I work toward the liberation of women, but I'm not feminist. I'm just a woman."

7. "In all my novels, I deal with the many problems and
prejudices which exist for Black people in Britain today."

8. "I usually make sure that my stories are from Africa or my own background so as to highlight the cultural background at the same time as telling the story."

9. “Black women all over the world should re-unite and re-
examine the way history has portrayed us."

Oh had your gentle soul sought through the might of your swift pen
a place for Africa in a world full of racial discrimination and degradation.
Like a candle, your light shines out
Like a beacon on a troubled ship, you silently fought for the freed!om of womanhood
But can I say: The breeze of Zeus is blown off your light but it cannot erase the memory of you off our hearts.
Sleep well Oh great African mother
Adieu Buchi Emecheta
We loved you
Sleep well

Let's show our final respect to her with some *Likes*

well not bad.

someone above me has brought tribalism into this again.

some people ehn.

The problem with Nigerians is that we have been programmed to divide ourselves between tribal and religious lines.

afonjas like jazz,
flat Igbos push drugs
abokis are terrorists. The truth is outside the shores of Nigeria we are not known as afonjas or Igbos or abokis. we are known as Nigerians.

Sad to hear about her passing.

I have just read two of her books..... Efuru and the Joys of Motherhood (which I read during my NYSC). Very interesting reads.

Both books feature women, ordinary women, confronting the changes in their world as a result of colonial rule and the modernism it brings. You get the idea that they adapt, and at the same time do not adapt.
