Let’s be honest – bearing in mind the hopelessly poor state of the economy, huge unemployment figures, and dwindling power sector (who would have thought electricity supply could actually get worsehuh) one wonders whether there’s anything positive to write about with regards to Nigeria at present.

However a couple of months ago I made a decision to always look for jewels amongst our seemingly endless rubble. After-all, no matter how bad things may be there will always be individuals that dedicate life and soul to making Nigeria a better place. There will always be heroes.

Until exactly three days ago January’s Hero was a no-brainer – His Excellency, Akinwunmi Ambode, Governor of Lagos State.

Despite a rather slow start, during which all and sundry, including yours truly, criticised him for the acute increase in Lagos traffic, Akinwumi Ambode is proving to be a stellar Lagos State Governor. Lagos State is growing in efficiency and organisation on a daily basis – traffic, security, taxation, transportation, road networks – all seamlessly improving as one. Indeed barely a day goes by without me uttering the words, ‘Ambode is really performing-o’.

But then came that chaotic traffic of Friday, 20th January – caused by road works!! Just one question comes to mind – why not carry out road works during the night whilst most of us are asleep, or on a Sunday morning when there are less cars on the road??

Alas, we all make mistakes from time to time, so one absurd day of traffic wasn’t going to deter me from honouring our erstwhile Governor of Lagos State with January’s Hero Award.

But then came a message from my friend Chinwe. It was a forward of a statement made by 2Face Idibia – asking us to join him on a march in protest of the hapless performance of our Federal Government.

A few hours earlier I had watched in awe as a Gambian musician who had been one of the most vociferous opponents of Jammeh’s attempts to stay in power, told us he had made a decision to oppose Jammeh with all heart, body, and soul; even if it meant losing his life. I marveled at his passion and dedication to his country, and lamented the sad reality that Nigeria possesses very few musicians / influential people that are willing to make such personal sacrifices.

But then came 2Face – putting his neck on the line for the sake of a better Nigeria.

Thank you 2Face for putting the fate of the starving millions before yourself. Thank you for being a jewel in the midst of seemingly never ending rubble.

Thank you 2Face for being January’s Hero.

Let’s all be February’s Heroes by joining this great servant of our land to peacefully tell our government ‘Enough is Enough!’ That something must be done to stop the abject suffering that has spread across an entire nation.’

This one no bi fasting and prayer-o. Let’s all get off your back-sides to peacefully march side by side on 5th February. A people united can accomplish any goal.

Needful but what if majority of the potential protesters voted. That could have averted this.
