What Nobody Is Telling You About The Recession And Economy by importexpert(m): 11:28am On Feb 08, 2017
It is no longer news that the Nigerian economy is in a really bad shape. We have read about it in the newspapers, we've watched the discussions on TV, and we have experienced it ourselves as Nigerians. The thing that should be of concern is not what everybody is saying; what should catch our attention is what is not being said. You cannot solve a problem by talking about the problem. You have to develop a different perspective to the problem. If we try to solve our problems with the same mindset which we used in creating them, then we are nothing but mere jokers. Our beloved nation has obviously not learn this lesson.

What are the things that people have not thought about concerning this recession? This is the first step out of this quagmire that we have found ourselves. I will explain this on an individual basis rather than focusing on the nation as a whole. I hope you will learn something from it.

1. Recession is not really a bad thing:

Okay, before you misconstrue this point, I want you to think. Is war a bad thing? Of course it is! People die. Properties worth millions are lost. There’s the emotional trauma and other things like famine that people have to cope with. The damage a two month old war creates can take more than two years to repair. But in the midst of this disaster, there are people that make money legitimately from it. E.g. companies that produce the weapons. In the same way, there are people who are happy despite this recession. They have positioned themselves to gain rather than suffer in this period. I repeat once again, not everybody is experiencing the pangs of recession. The sensible question should be: “how are they doing it?”

2. The economy will not recover soon:

Many people will claim they have ideas that will revitalize the economy. Others will like to believe that a miracle can happen to boost the economy within a short period of time. But this will not be so. Economic recovery will not occur in an instant. Forget what some “experts” are saying by predicting six months or one year recovery. The only way we can truly assess this is when prices of goods starts dropping and not just some paper statistics.

3. Protests will not help you right now:

I do not have any issue with the protest, but let’s be rational and predict how things will unfold. If the protests holds, the government will promise to do something about it. After a few weeks of public discussion in the newspaper, the government will set up a committee. (This is Nigeria. Nothing happens without committees). The committee might use maybe three months or more to gather its facts and recommendations. Once they submit it, it will take another period of time for the government to study the report and then set up a task force. All throughout this time, hunger is still biting hard. It will take another lengthy period of time for the effects to trickle down to the masses. So, it will take a while (probably a little longer than we anticipate) for there to be tangible fruits from the protests. Protests are long term options, but have no short term help for you. for a short term solution, you as an individual needs a liberation plan that will help you out.

4. Your job may not save you:

If you can read and have been following the events in the labor market, you will know that there is a lot of instability at the moment. There have been reoccurring job losses across all sectors. Companies are folding up leaving their employees stranded. I will say one in every three Nigerian knows someone who has been affected by this. It boils down to one fact: there is no job security at the moment. The only place where we have believed that there is job security is the civil service. But many civil servants are being owed salaries for months and there seems to be no light in the tunnel for them.

5. Your saving key is what you don’t know:

Face the truth: you are experiencing recession because of what you don’t know. What you know obviously is not really useful for this period or else, you would not be faced with challenges like you are facing now. It is safe to say what you don’t know is what may be the panacea for the current economic woes. This means if you desire to step out of the constraints that many people are also suffering, you need new, relevant and useful knowledge. Like someone said, “the problem is not that you failed; the problem is that you don’t know how to succeed.”
