Hmmm! Governor Fayose paid Barrister Ozekhome N75 million as "part payment" of his professional fees.

Was the payment for defending him before God's court?

In this same country where you have lawyers chasing blackmarias in front of courts across the country, looking for charge and bail cases as a way of making ends meet.

What I don't understand is how Ozekhome, who rode on the bandwagon of social activism to make a name for himself, suddenly got sucked into the corrupt system.

How come a governor can afford a sum of 75 million as part payment of legal fee. Is the lawyer defending him against the judgement of God.

It amazes me how some people think. Before casting aspersions of the learned silk, they should make findings on how much some ordinary lawyers charge on some cases. If a lawyer doesn't take a case on account that such person is a "thief" or "criminal", it is a against his professional ethics. Everyone is entitled to legal representation. I hope y'all remember the legal fees of the lawyers helping on the Abacha loot.

This case is simple legal fireworks. The precedence that this case will set up when it is eventually decided will be an interesting reference point for future cases, and for law students in school.
Fayose took money from the NSA no doubt, and that money is in his Zenith bank account. The EFCC tried to get a judge to freeze the account because it contained proceeds of corruption. Justice Taiwo of the FHC Ekiti said the freeze order was illegal because Fayose enjoys immunity. Now what do we do with the account because the owner enjoys immunity, but the contents are still proceeds of corruption? Simple! Whenever the money leaves the account whose owner enjoys immunity, the EFCC gets hold of the money because the immunity would have no effect once outside the immuned account. The money still remains proceeds of corruption or laundered money. The EFCC is absolutely right on this, legally at least.
I'm waiting for the judicial verdict on this one. The judgement will set a very interesting precedent.

If a lawyer collects as much as 100 million naira for a case, what stops him from using 40-50% of that to settle the judge and then wins the case. He can then go on and receive additional cases, and settle judges to also win those ones. And the cycle just continues like that.

And he will keep on receiving more clients, as people will erroneously think the guy is a very good lawyer.

Security agencies need to beam their search light on the legal profession if we are to have an headway on this fight on corruption.

Hope this lawyer knows Fayose is a public servant that is placed on salary and entitlements that can be easily verified. For that public servant to pay that amount as part payment should be something any honest Nigerian should be worried, especially from a state workers were previously owed salaries for months.

If, as a lawyer, you receive robbed money from alleged armed or pen robbers to defend them, and the money you so receive could eventually be shown to be part of the stolen money and ruled forfeited as part of the blood money, then that temporary freeze IS needed. You can even end up being charged as an accessory to the crime.

So, Mr Ozekhome, please allow the ongoing legal process on the larger allegedly looted money — of which the portion now traced to your account forms a part — run its course.

There is nothing criminal about Ozekome receiving that money from Fayose because at the present there is no law regulating professional service fees in Nigeria. You can only investigate the source of fund used for the said payment not blocking the account of the beneficiary. The EFCC action wasnt in order and I'm sure Ozekome will claim damages on this.
