See posts everyday on Niraland depicting the unabashed slaughter of fona by individuals that think only of today. So-called Rebels are in one corner poluting the Delta environment as much as the oil companies and in another corner people are slautering wildlife willynilly. These creatures are important in maintaining a healthy ecosystem without which the land will eventually die. |

The UNEP report on Ogoni is such a huge step at protecting the ND environment that the evil GEJ administration refused to acknowledge. Such senseless attitudes even from our so called sons we should discourage as much as we can. To even think that GEJ did and taught zoology is unbelievable when he never showed the importance of the application of such knowledge in making the ND flora, fauna, and the abiotic factors safe or improved and conserved . The best thing you and I can do is to continue our advocacy and awareness campaigns to make individuals, the private sector especially the oil companies , our government, NGOs and the international community know the state and health of the ND ecosystems. Just yesterday my dad drew my attention to the fact that vultures are almost extinct in Nigeria. Phone calls to friends in major towns across the country confirmed this sad story. The implication ,as I read in one article online, is that the absence of vultures may lead to increase in rabies and rabid dogs attack incidents due to increased feral population since the eco balance has been disturbed by the vulture extinction. God help Nigeria. |

"Before you can have a dog as pet, you must be able to feed yourself first" .. . Nigeria has not enacted laws that protect human beings, so we don't have knowledge of laws that protect anything except laws that protect the criminals that make the laws. ... The constitution guiding you today was written mainly by the ex Army generals who own oil Wells all over the place. ....And until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to everyone without regard to tribe, trust me, there would never be peace or protection..... |

Some states have some laws which protect endangered species such as laws governing the killing of pandrilus monkeys of Cross River state. The issue often is the awareness and enforcement of laws. Cross River state was quite vibrant under Donald Duke in the area of ecosystem administration. This implies the quality of people that get into positions needs to be x-rayed before we get completely run over by hoodlums and half wits. The public needs to be sensitised with jingles, banners and roadshows. Many like to use the common excuse of hunger being the reason for the unwarranted killings of some species but I think we often love to excuse brigandage. If you continue to kill all species out of hunger what would you eat tomorrow or would you suddenly become vegetarian? If the crops you eat are not replenished what hope for tomorrow? Sustainability is alien to the Nigerian added to our obstinacy. We should continue to speak out against such acts before it is too late. More threads on this issue would be appreciated. |

Because there's no way they'll enforce it. Nigerians only understand jungle justice that's why flora and fauna are destroyed at will if it will serve our purpose. |
