It is now illegal for telecom operators or their representatives to do registration of SIM cards in an open or ‘’uncontrolled environment’’, an official has said.

The Head of Enforcement Unit at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Salisu Abdu disclosed this yesterday while speaking with journalists after three persons found registering SIM cards in open places were arrested in Abuja.

Abdu said government through the commission had issued a directive to all telecom operators since November to stop their agents from registering SIM cards under umbrellas and in kiosks effective from February 1, 2017.

“SIM registration should only be done in a controlled environment- a permanent building with logos and structures of the operators in place - with identities of the agents doing the registration.

“We came up with this so we will be able to trace where SIM cards are registered to stem the tide of rising crimes, especially kidnapping and militancy”, the NCC official said.

He said N5million would be slammed on any dealer or operator who flouts the directive.

Federal Govt is a bastard. Instead of making life easier for Nigerians but they are always after the hungry ones trying to make ends meet. There are a lot of ways to check crime rate. God will punish all of them.

There is sense in this, but shouldn't this lying government allow the tide of hardship to settle before implementing this?

Re: FG Bans Open Registration Of SIM Cards by Aburi001: 7:21am On Feb 16, 2017
This is another Anti-Masses policy by the Federal Government.

You don't provide jobs for people and you won't allow the masses help themselves.

If they go into prostitution or crimes you will arrest, lock them up and even jail them.

This is grossly unfair!

Many things about this Government is just bent on frustrating it's citizens. Don't they know that this act will breed unemployment. Most young guys and ladies under umbrellas doing sim registration does it to earn a living, put food on their table. So wetin those people go do now? Rather than stopping this, I suggest that FG look for a way with the telco companies to strengthen and authenticate sim registration so that attackers and bad people won't make use of the act to commit crime
Re: FG Bans Open Registration Of SIM Cards by Nobody: 7:27am On Feb 16, 2017
Someone cannot register sim card in peace again.
Re: FG Bans Open Registration Of SIM Cards by Valfrankie(m):
Like the country isn't difficult enough already, they had to add to it. This government is just all out to frustrate the masses and take food out of the common man's table. Banks and other financial industries have taken over airtime sells, and put so many people out of business, the poor youths under the umbrellas can only make a living by selling Sims and doing registration, now the government want to take that one too without providing an alternate means of survival for those that will be affected. Into whose database do the data captured by the roadside operators go? This is a faux, putting up a show to make people think they are working. If you can't create more jobs, don't destroy the already available ones
