Let me drop a little insight into what is currently obtainable on the fields, in the farms and interior villages where cashew nuts are being harvested before transported down to Lagos. This is going to be very helpful to most of you who are "Arm Chair" exporter, "Arm Chair" buyers/agents who sit in your room in front of your laptops thinking about how buying or trading on cashew nuts should be done ideally, or having this weird fantasy that 1+1 will always be 2.

Well newsflash, its not like that anymore. You should begin to liken cashew nuts business to oil business and bunkering. The farmers are making a kill presently in the villages, infact many are richer than those of us in the cities all thanks to cashew money. Let me tell you what the Indians have done,

The Indians are driving up the price of cashew nuts daily with too much money chasing few products, the Indians themselves who are the buyers that you used to export to in the past are on ground physically in these villages and give most of these cashew nuts warehouse owners hundreds of millions of Naira to buy as many cashew nuts as possible for them. They don't negotiate prices front and back like our local exporters do with the farmers.

It is after the warehouse owners have bought as many as much trucks of cashew nuts available from the farmers that they begin to give the Indians report on how the money was spent. At that point you who happens to be the local exporter who probably wants to buy very low price and export at high profits will be arguing on the price back and forth in which the farmers won't have time for you and go with the highest bidder.

So think well and get your acts right before you launch into this Jungle.

It's cashew nuts off season again and business had been good generally for sellers and warehouse owners but not for buyers. Why? You may ask.

Price!... Yes prices were not favorable to new or intending investors/buyers at all. This last season, a ton was sold for the range of 400k - 600k in kogi state with the average hovering around 500k per ton. Now to an intending exporter this pricing is a kill joy but to the experience exporter... This price is pure Gold and trust me they made a fortune off it and they wouldn't want it to go any lower. It's simple, Forget about this year and plan for next year. Most of the products you see being ferried from here to Lagos for export were paid for last year at cheaper rates compared to what is being obtained in the market presently. The current prices can be likened to "black market" prices in the currency market.

Cashew season is usually between late January - Early May, the rest period of the year will be off season and this is the time when you can get your cashew for almost less than half of the price during the windfall. But be careful here to get everything right else you will have your fingers burnt.

For you to succeed with this method which the professionals call it "cluster farming", you have to be established in the locality where the products are sourced.

- Get a suitable piece of land and develop your own warehouse
- Get an indigene who is knowledgeable about cashew nuts and know the farmers, to run and manage your warehouse (some villages are hostile to strangers)
