Very soon, the likes of 'I pass my neighbour' generators, i.e. those small 0.5kva generators may soon disappear from the street of Nigeria. Lighting up bulbs and power appliances such as TVs, Mobile phone, Laptops and fans will be made possible with mobile electricity powered by MTN.

This innovative service from Lumos Mobile Electricity Service is powered by MTN, is set to be launched nationwide on Monday, February 20, 2017, with the Minister of Power, Babatunde Fashola, expected to be present at the occasion.

It is said to be unique since the mobile electricity service kit includes a solar panel, DC-to-AC converter, an indoor power unit, two LED bulbs and phone charging accessories.

Lumos, being a globally renowned solar architects in conjunction with the telecom titan, MTN, is targeting businesses and families around the country for the service.

According to TheCable, on Friday, the two companies said a press statement, “With this innovative service, Nigerians can enjoy affordable, accessible, noise-free and fume-free electricity for everyday use and conveniently pay with airtime from a MTN mobile phone. The Mobile Electricity Service kit which comes with a 5-year repair service policy, can light up bulbs and power appliances like fans, televisions, cellphones and computers.”

Ferdi Moolman, the present CEO of MTN Nigeria, said MTN has rolled out variety of products and initiatives which have helped to better the lives of Nigerians.

Moolman said,“Our partnership with LUMOS was borne out of the need to provide safe, affordable electricity alternatives for Nigerians to uninterruptedly conduct their daily businesses. We at MTN value lives and the overall wellbeing of Nigerians and we’ll continue to put out initiatives that focus on providing life solutions."

Still speaking on the launching of the mobile electricity service, the CEO and co-founder of Lumos, Davidi Vortman said: “This is an incredibly exciting partnership that will bring power and new opportunities to homes and businesses throughout Nigeria. Together we can make a fantastic impact on people’s lives, helping children do their homework, ensuring businesses and clinics can stay open later, and ensuring people no longer have to rely on dangerous stoves.”

Interested users can subscribed to the Mobile Electricity Service at MTN stores nationwide.

Nothing to welcome about this development. Its been around for sometime now. And for crying out loud, why would the minister want to grace such an event that is obviously targeted at ripping of hard working average income earning Nigerians. To crown it up, its coming from MTN, aka Money-Taking from Nigerians.
Its a national embarrassment for Pete's sake.
Anyways for those who don't mind buying it, here is the low down. You buy the setup fr 15k. The bulb costs abt 2k each, you have to buy their fan, buy their tv etc. This is because you can only power devices and appliances that utilize DC. In essence, you have to buy new appliances and devices to utilize this system with. Most importantly, you have to pay a monthly access fee of 4k or thereabout. It was originally 3k but the price was reviewed upward by mtn. According to them you pay this fee fr 5 years straight before it becomes yours. The choice is yours but look before you leap.

It lasts from what i have heard. I don't personally have but a close friend of mine has it. I think they have a warranty in place fr that duration.
N. B. My friend who uses it had to buy virtually all the connected devices and home appliances from them. They even sell a tv as you cannot connect your normal led, lcd, or receiver to it. He stays in a staff quarters where he pays no nepa bills so he only pays monthly fee for the mtn inverter. The access fee is paid for via purchase of recharge cards
