A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has discharged and acquitted a traditional ruler, Alhaji Hassan Welewa, and four others out of the 12 persons standing trial for the murder of the four undergraduate of the University of Port Harcourt.

It will be recalled that four students of UNIPORT were killed in a mob action at Omuokiri village in Aluu Community, Ikwerre LGA on the 5th of October 2012.

The 12 people were arrested in relation to the murder and were placed on trial for their alleged role in the incident.

Delivering its ruling on Thursday, the trial judge, Justice Letan Nyordee, discharged and acquitted Lawal Segun, Okoghiroh Endurance, Ozioma Abajuo, Chigozie Evans Samuel and the traditional ruler in Aluu community, Alhaji Welewa.

The court freed the suspects after the Director of Public Prosecution filed a submission of “no case” on the five persons to the court, saying they have no case to answer in the matter.

Nyordee, having considered DPP’s submission, ruled that no prima-facie case was established against the five persons and set them free.

Meanwhile, the remaining seven accused persons are still facing trial, just as the matter was adjourned till February 9, 2017.

However, the traditional ruler of Omuokiri, Aluu community, Welewa, described the court ruling as an act of God.

Welewa stated that the judgment was a true justice, noting that he never had a hand in the murder of the four students.

He further slammed his kinsmen for their conducts during his trial period, noting that they had intended to dethrone him.

No, that was actually a good development for a number of reasons.
Firstly, we're now aware that the case has not been swept under the carpet.
Secondly, not everyone arrested are guilty just as not everyone guilty was arrested.

People wey get money don find their way. I tell people before you decide to be troublesome make sure you have enough money in your pocket, cos being troublesome doesn't come cheap.
