TRAVELERS STORM ARIK FOR FARE REFUND ON INTERNATIONAL ROUTES
source; http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/02/travelers-storm-arik-for-fare-refund-on.html

Scores of passengers Monday besieged Arik Air headquarters to seek refund for their fares on London, New York and Johannesburg routes suspended by the airline since the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) took over on February 9, 2017.

The passengers who gathered at the reception of the airline headquarters in Lagos took a swipe at the airline for its inability to timely refund their fares to enable them join other airlines to their destinations.

The passengers were shouting at the officials at the reception, who tried to calm them.

This is just as the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) disclosed on Monday that Arik Air, under its previous management, was indebted to the tune of $78 million to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

This was disclosed by Mr. Simon Tumba, Media Consultant to Arik Air , in Lagos.

Tumba said the debt was for all aviation services provided under the platform of IATA which recently suspended the airline from its Billing and Settlement Plan (BSP) and Cargo Account Settlement System (CASS).

He said: “Arik Air under the former management was owing everywhere they operated. Apart from the over N300 billion owed to AMCON, the airline also owes about N50 billion to Nigerian banks and another $78 million to IATA.

According to him, out of the almost 30 aircraft in the airline’s fleet, only about 10 was currently serviceable which necessitated the new management to reduce its routes and flight operations.

He alleged that the new management also discovered that Arik had no record of gains and losses of operations carried out in 2015.

Tumba said the management in collaboration with AMCON have appointed KPMG to carry out a forensic audit on the airline, adding that there result would be out in the next ten weeks.

“The current management is looking at the backlog of salaries owed staff because the staff needs to be motivated to get the airline running properly.

“The current management is working with government to add five aircraft to the fleet to increase its size and the airline’s routes.

“We have also resolved the issue of fuel supply which has improved Arik Air’s flight operations since the takeover,” he added.

Do not book Arik air...I paid 20,000 to book my flight from Abuja to uyo, and the flight was cancelled just like that. Since on the 18th, no refunds.

They sent me a form to fill for refunds, I have checked through my mail, I can't find my booking confirmation mail where I can get my flight details.

Nigerians not dey hear word. Is this not same Arik that has no air-conditioner in their planes and also mistake their arrival and departure dates? Yet Nigerians will still patronize them despite their bad services all over the web.

We know that ARIK have not being doing well in recent times.
They would cancel flight without adequate information. Most times leaving their passengers stranded but

AMCON should take over with sense.
Not repeating the same mistakes they did because of restructuring.
Most business/appointments deals does not know this neither will they be waiting for you.

They should not only refund but compensate them.

There is no way a plane won't have air-conditioning ..commercial jets must be pressurised to fly so getting air-conditioned air to circulate is a must

False.. That must be propaganda. Air peace surpassed Arik a long time ago in terms of patronage. You go to the airport and you see only a few people boarding arik flights unlike before but air peace flights are almost always fully boarded.

I'm thinking along those lines too.
Recall that Aero Contractors has also been taken over by AMCON; now Arik is under govt control too.
It could be that the FG wants to merge both airlines to form the new national carrier, after paying off the debts of both airlines.
In the end, Nigeria could have 3 strong airlines - the national carrier, Medview, and Air Peace - plying long haul international routes.

I seriously hope so. That Nigeria acquires it and not individual.
For better maintenance.
In any case Nigeria needs to learn how to make the country business friendly.
This will put the mind of the investors at ease and they would want to invest here.

Its not propaganda ..Arik till just weeks ago had a 23 aircraft fleet as compared to Air peace 9 today ..Air peace has really grown since 2013 and with the demise of Arik and Aero are the new Giants in the industry but truth be told weeks ago Arik was airlift ingredients more passengers

The govt will invite private investors to run the national airline. In fact, the FG will only have between 5-10% equity in it; moreover, it will be listed in the capital market.

We may even witness a merger between Medview and Air Peace, which will ultimately result in two super Nigerian carriers that could challenge the likes of BA, Emirates et al on direct flights between Nigeria and major European and North American destinations
