Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Saad Abubakar III has urged the Federal Government to relax the ban on importation of rice and vehicles through land borders. The Sultan spoke at his palace yesterday when Acting President Yemi Osinbajo visited him. “We will continue to serve as the voices of the voiceless and in this direction, we are calling on the federal government to look into some recent policies that will further tighten the noose on the necks of Nigerians. ”Nigerians are already going through difficult times and policies should not be taken to further aggravate the suffering of Nigerians. ” This will also avoid disharmony between the government and the governed,” he said Sultan Abubakar cited the examples of the ban on the importation of rice and vehicles through land borders, saying ” the policies should be relaxed.” He stressed that some of the policies were “still ill-timed”. The monarch pledged to provide sustained support, prayers and wise counsel to the government, adding, “we will always work for the peace, unity, stability and the even socioeconomic development of Nigeria. “We are also assuring the government of our sustained total support, loyalty and commitment”, and would work towards the spiritual and temporal development of Nigerians. He congratulated Osinbajo at 60, welcoming him to “the club of the old people.” The Acting President underscored the importance of Sokoto in the affairs of Nigeria and pledged that the government will continue to pursue the development of agriculture and solid minerals to diversify the economy. “The development of agriculture and agro-allied value chains are key in this direction.” http://thenationonlineng.net/sultan-govt-relax-ban-rice-vehicles-import-land-borders/ |

I agree with the sultan on the ban of rice. it is ill-timed. invest in agriculture first then place the ban on the importation of rice. that makes the populace feel less of the impact. |

I was thinking within me, what if govt paid a token to farmers for every tone of rice locally produced as a way of encouraging and subsidizing them and the consuming public? That way we will be subsidizing production as much as consumption and jobs will be created in addition to forex being saved. |

sarrki:Any law that has no human face is oppression...and for a to function,it must have teeth to bite.....compare these two statements..before making those debased arguments and analogies you are known for...... Don't underestimate the power of choices....even if you flood the whole country with the so called foreign rice, some notable families won't touch it,so why are you flaring up? Because of BMC? |

A policy that has made Nigerians so poor that people find it difficult to eat 3 square meal but trust the stubborn headed president and that sadist at customs, they know next to nothing about multiplier effect. His coming back home is a great sad news to me. One man running the country into recession, so dull headed. |

Absolutely, lifting the ban on importation of rice and vehicles through land borders will ease the hardships faced by many Nigerians. It may be a good policy, but it is poorly timed. The sultan is right. Osinbajo may hearken, but Bubu will likely disagree. |

sarrki:Where is our own rice? That seems paradoxical! U guys were peddling lies here that Nigerian rice farmers experince bumper harvest yet the price of rice keeps skyrocketing. The policy is not well timed. Buhari made mistake in implementing the policy but he does not want to backpedal. Wallahi, this is one thing I hate about Buhari, dogged even to a superior argument. |

whatever will be done to make advancements in the local production of rice is acceptable, I support the embargo placed on rice. but for vehicles, Nigeria needs stable power first off and secondly, the Nigerian steel industry needs at Lear 45%production capacity. so I go with the sultan on this one |

sarrki:We will keep eating our own rice. If you can afford 23k to buy a bag of rice, most Nigerians do not have such money. Do you know that Nigerian rice is more expensive than foreign rice as we speak? God bless the Sultan. He should also tell the stubborn President same thing Lalasticlala |

I support the Sultan. Much as some of these policies would be good, they are ill timed and not thought through. Easing the hardship of the average Nigerian should be paramount. |
