"I think the impulse to say that trans women are women just like women born female are women comes from a need to make trans issues mainstream. Because by making them mainstream, we might reduce the many oppressions they experience.
But it feels disingenuous to me. The intent is a good one but the strategy feels untrue. Diversity does not have to mean division.
Because we can oppose violence against trans women while also acknowledging differences. Because we should be able to acknowledge differences while also being supportive. Because we do not have to insist, in the name of being supportive, that everything is the same. Because we run the risk of reducing gender to a single, essentialist thing."

iRepNaija1:
You're mixing up biological assignment with gender identity. Each person is born biologically male or biologically female. Gender identity deals with how a person identifies himself or herself as a man or a woman. Yes, gender identity is a social construct, basically roles society has assigned for each male or female on how to "behave" as a man or woman. Trans women are people biologically born male who now identify as women while ciswomen are people born biologically female who identify as women.

The thing about privilege is that you're not supposed to notice it, even when it's there. Privilege is like driving a car on a smooth, paved road. You're going the fastest, leaving others behind and you think you're naturally a better driver when in fact there are special mechanisms in your car that enable you to travel at the speed you're going. People have all sorts of privileges they don't even realize: male privilege, white privilege, heterosexual privilege, socioeconomic privilege. But we're so used to it, we take it for granted. The best way to know whether you have privilege or not is not to look at what you have (or what you think you lack) but to look at what others lack in comparison to you.
porozhniy I am really enjoying your exchange here. I would prefer if we got another thread because this one is already saturater with toxic ignorance. I am conflicted on this issue. And a stimulating intellectual interaction would help. So whadya say gentlemen.

Chimamanda has received enough backlash in the Nigerian media for her support of LGBTQ, do you "reeeaaaalllyy" think she is homophobic or transphobic??

President of the most populous black nation is rubbish because your country has no real power.
The only people in America that knows buhari are Nigerians there. No one else gives a shitt about a third world president except when Bokoharam news pops up.
Chimamanda on the other hand is a symbol of American feminism. She is a role model to the vast majority of American women, and over 80% of americans have heard of her at one point or another.
She gets contacted by various American media agencies, educational institutions and women empowerment groups for interviews and events on a weekly basis ,and she has just been inducted into the exclusive American academy of Arts and Letters- That is the crème de la crème of American Arts.
Most major female American music and movie superstars from the likes of beyonce to Rihanna, to Hally berry, Julia Roberts e.t.c. have publicly contacted her for one or two collaborations because of the strength of her brand. These are all on youtube.
Yes, I know it sounds demeaning that your president welds far less influence in America than a mere individual, but it is true.
You clearly do not know the meaning of the word ''influence''.

Only a ignoramus would believe a Buhari that very very few in America knows or gives a shitt about, has more influence than chimamanda in America.

Agreed. No one gives a damn about an African president, but they do not care about a Nigerian author either. It is very delusional to think that Mrs Adichie wields any form of influence among Americans. Her opinion pieces only bother Nigerians; both at home and in the States. She is not even a C-list celebrity in America. The only ignoramus here is you.
The president of Nigeria would make decisions that would have a significant effect in Nigeria and in the States than whatever your writer of fiction ever will. That is how ''influence'' is defined. If you want to define influence your own way, you might as well say that Wizkid is more influential that Buhari. He got a grammy nomination.
PS: The most influential people in the world are the Putins and the Xinpings and not the Beyonces and Jay-zs or the Rowlings despite the fact that they may seem to be more popular. Do you want to hazard a guess as to why that is?

No C list celebrity will be asked to comment on NATIONAL TELEVISION on Donald Trump candidacy and how it affects Black Americans if her opinion didn't matter.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eloHoAvArCo
No C-list Celebrity would be asked to speak on Ted-X which shapes the views of millions of Americans. And Btw, her speech on Ted-X has been as the foremost rallying crying for feminism in America. Beyoncé used it in her music video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hg3umXU_qWc&t=554s
No C-list celebrity would be seen as the one of the foremost national symbol of feminism in America to be used in mainstream Pop Music

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75BknhBhWVg
No C-list celebrity would be invited as the foremost speaker for the elite Black-tie commonwealth event.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmsYJDP8g2U
No C-ist would be invited to a foremost American High school in Washington as role model for future Congress men and women and even presidents.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcehZ3CjedU
Chimamnda inducted into the Acdemy of Arts and Letters

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3yOgJYtqlY
Infact, most of her cliques in the US are not Nigerians. If you happen to go through most of her youtube videos, most of the people and fans commenting there are white people .
And btw, the most influential people in the world are not all politicians. Infact very few of them are politicians.

As far back as 2012, Goodluck Jonathan was already on the Time 100 list. In 2015, Adichie made the list (Beyonce effect) but Buhari also made the list even after spending less than one year in office. This is proof that the president of Nigeria is a global force to be reckoned with.
Adichie was more or less unknown to Americans before Beyonce happened to her. You'd also become influential if Beyonce happens to you.

Her position is not clear. She shouldn't do an essay to clarify her statement

You say she wavers. That means she holds one opinion on an issue then she changes that opinion later without any precedent. But this is her first recorded opinion on the issue of transgenders.

How much clearer would expect her opinion to be. I think she is already clear enough.
