Bad disease that does not have symptoms....the only symptom you will see is blindness, if you are lucky, one eye first or peripherial vision. On your own, go for ocular checkup ones a year.

Disease second leading cause of blindness worldwide

No fewer than 1.8 million Nigerians of over 40 years age suffer from glaucoma with almost 360,000 of them blind in both eyes.

Glaucoma is a disease of the eye in which fluid pressure within the eye rises – if left untreated the patient may lose vision and even become blind.

The Associate Professor of Ophthalmology, Head Glaucoma Services and Acting Head of Department of Ophthalmology, College of Medicine/Lagos University Teaching Hospital (CMUL/LUTH), Idi-Araba, Dr. Adeola Onakoya, said yesterday at a press briefing to mark the World Glaucoma Week, March 12 to 16, 2017, that glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide and in Nigeria with a prevalence of 16.7 per cent, second only to cataract.

Onakoya, at the event organized by Pfizer said glaucoma is the commonest cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and in Nigeria.

The ophthalmologist said glaucoma is a public health problem and currently 70 million people suffer from glaucoma worldwide, with 10 million blind.

She said it is anticipated that by 2020, sufferers would increase to 80 million and blindness from the disease would increase as well.

The eye specialist said blindness from glaucoma is 10 times higher in the developing world and the clinical course of the disease in blacks follows an aggressive course. She said there is increased prevalence amongst Africans, which increases with age in 0.5 to nine per cent of population over 40 years and increases to 15 per cent in population over 65 years. “With ageing, the population of sufferers will increase,” Onakoya said.

The ophthalmologist said only 50 per cent of the disease is diagnosed in developed countries and 85 per cent are undiagnosed in developing countries. She said patients in the developing countries usually present at an advance stage of the disease when there is irreversible visual loss.

Onakoya expressed regrets that awareness is very low, with only five per cent of Nigerian glaucoma population being aware.

She, however, said early detection and appropriate treatment of the disease seem to be the answer to the late presentation of sufferers and reduction of blindness from the disease. “Education on the natural history of the disease will also improve the compliance and adherence to treatment in the diagnosed patients,” Onakoya said.

The ophthalmologist said creation of awareness on the disease process and enlightenment programmes, backed up with case detection (through screening) would go a long way in reducing blindness.

She recommended that special attention should also be given to First Degree Relatives (FDR) of Glaucoma patients because of the heritability nature of the disease with the hope that the news can spread through word-of-mouth through at-risk groups.

Onakoya, however, warned that every Nigerian is at risk of the disease but this is higher in the population over 30 years, so special attention must be paid to include every Nigerian above the age of 30 years as the disease tends to present a decade earlier in Africans.

According to Onakoya, mass glaucoma screening and early treatment have been a cardinal aspect of the Rapid Response Initiative (RRI), one of President Muhammadu Buhari’s nationwide quick-win thrusts in healthcare.

She said in pursuance of the same vision, LUTH has outlined a robust programme to educate the public on glaucoma and also carry out case detection tests for willing members of the public. This, Onakoya said, will be done in conjunction with Glaucoma Patient Care Initiative in Nigeria, a registered glaucoma patients group and the ongoing RRI programme.

Onakoya the screening exercise will be conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 14 and 15, 2017 at the Guinness Eye Centre, LUTH. She said a public lecture to sensitise the populace and impart knowledge on the disease has been scheduled for Thursday, March 16, 2017 at National Sickle Cell Centre.

The ophthalmologist said LUTH should champion efforts to create awareness of glaucoma and the need for all Nigerians above the age of 30 to undergo regular screening for this common cause of blindness.

This article is ALMOST useless as it does not state possible causes and prevention of glaucoma. I have a boss who had to go through 4 surgeries in Israel and was only able to salvage one eye from total blindness.

Glaucoma is a tragic disease. it has cause permanent blindness to my dad after series of operation. worse of it, is the pain he do pass through daily. upon which you spend almost 12k every 4weeks for eye drops like cosorpt and Travatan. the earlier you detect it, the better your chances of saving your sight.

I am a glaucoma patient. I have completely lost my vision in one eye. I am trying my best to preserve the last eye.
The treatment is eyedrop. Surgery is not the best treatment please.
For those that are lucky to detect their's early, please avoid eating plenty salt. Stop doing streinous exercises. Stop consuming excess alcohol. Cut down on smoking, if you cannot stop it. Stop using aphrodisiacs. Stop reading for more than 30mins at a stretch. Stop using your smartphones at very high screen brightness. Stop driving at night, except when there are no other road users that can dazzle you.

Note: the eye drops will greatly reduce your libido and don't see it as impotence. Choose wisely between your visiblity and a 30mins fun.

Lastly, i wish all glaucoma patients a speedy recovery. And for those who have sound vision, i pray you shall never fall victim to the disease called GLAUCOMA.

I wish us a blissful Glaucoma Week!

Our researchers The thing is pretty simple, saying dey should cure glaucoma is like saying dey should cure STROKE! The damage done to the optic nerve head is irreversible! When a nerve atrophies in d CNS it does not regenerate! The drops u take cannot bring back a DEAD blood vessel, all they do is lower d pressure in d eyes because increased pressure leads to nerve death..

.
Let me just say little
Glaucoma is caused by several factors... first it can be genetic or acquired. it's characterized by raised intraocular pressure. A trauma to your eye, an untreated eye condition and abuse of steroid-containing eye drops could all lead to raised intraocular pressure, in turn leading to Glaucoma (acquired). Most cases in Nigeria are Genetic.
Most times there are no symptoms for Glaucoma (you may just wake up one day and it has eaten up your vision) on few occasions, you experience pain.
There is no cure for Glaucoma. it can only be managed by seeing a doctor regularly. The earlier you are diagnosed of it, the better your chances of preserving your vision.
It's advisable you go to a good eye clinic regularly to see a doctor.

coolBeautiful question. Glaucoma is hereditary. And the moSt shocking thing is there is no symptoms other than regular eye check. You can imagine my shock last year when I was diagnosed with suspected glaucoma. How?My nine years old son went for his usual regular eye check ups and to my dismay I was told to bring my wife. Her eyes were checked and was told it's not her.I was still lost.I was told to bring a relation in my family.Came with my elder sister, when she was checked they saw traces and amazingly that was how my eyes were checked. The rest is history. I have being attending the clinic with my son periodically. Glaucoma is irreversible but can be managed when detected early. The bad thing about glaucoma is one eye is gone for good but because the other eyes still aids vision one thinks they can see.Until they finally loose both eyes.
Regular check up is the key.Hope I educated you.

What's wrong with you?Because you want to sell a product you lead people wrongly that's poverty mentality. That thing you are advertising does not stop glaucoma OK.Glaucoma is irreversible and can only be managed.Early detection is the key not that thing you are selling.

Yes, Marijuanna to be precise, but it only reduces the eye pressure level for 3 to 4 hours. Therefore,it only works for 4 hours max. How many of it then will you have to take in a day.

NB ; Glaucoma has no cure, it can only be managed.

Thanks.

you must have done surgery before massaging. Actually that surgery was tedious and mind blowing. imagine getting 3 injections on each eye before they operate then and also one each after . There was this former Nigerian goal keeper that had his session after my own. The guy died in the theater. I think his name is best ogedengbe.
