The White House, Official Residence And Workplace Of The President Of The U.S. by Explorers(op):
For two hundred years, the White House has stood as a symbol of the Presidency, the United States government, and the American people.

Its history, and the history of the nation’s capital, began when President George Washington signed an Act of Congress in December of 1790 declaring that the federal government would reside in a district "not exceeding ten miles square on the river Potomac."

President Washington, together with city planner Pierre L’Enfant, chose the site for the new residence, which is now 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

As preparations began for the new federal city, a competition was held to find a builder of the "President’s House."

Nine proposals were submitted, and Irish-born architect James Hoban won a gold medal for his practical and handsome design.

Construction began when the first cornerstone was laid in October of 1792.

Although President Washington oversaw the construction of the house, he never lived in it.

It was not until 1800, when the White House was nearly completed, that its first residents, President John Adams and his wife, Abigail, moved in.

Since that time, each President has made his own changes and additions.

If it's Nigerian government they'll build something that won't last so as to demolish and rebuild as a means to loot the country's treasury!

Very religious nation yet nothing to show for the religiosity! But how come the US is religious yet they are the best at what they do?

It was indeed built by slaves.

Michelle Obama was right, D.C. commissioners had slaves, in addition to white laborers and European immigrants, construct the president’s house.

The first family actually has to pay for their food.

They don’t pay rent, but food and grocery expenses, in addition to things like toiletries and dry cleaning, are taken out of the president’s salary annually.

This is a view of the White House kitchen circa 1892.

It's the only private residence of a head of state that the public can visit for free.

Visitors do have to request and book tours in advance, though.

At various times, the house and grounds have been totally open to the public.

Thomas Jefferson put artifacts on the lawn for peoples’ enjoyment, Grover Cleveland’s nanny used to walk his daughter Ruth among the masses on the South Lawn, and Warren Harding left the gates open for anyone to stroll around. Now, the property is completely gated off and some surrounding streets are closed to traffic.

Times have changed. Now the heart of man is desperately wicked. Mayeb if the Bible knew how it will be now it will have looked for a more befitting word for it.

In 1814, during the War of 1812, the White House was set ablaze by the British Army in the Burning of Washington, destroying the interior and charring much of the exterior.

This was done in retaliation for burning Upper Canada’s Parliament Buildings in the Battle of York.
The white house was set ablaze by Canadians during the war of 1812. Though Canada was a territory of Britain then, Canadians take pride in telling anyone that cares to hear that they are the only country in the world that has burnt down the white house grin

The design for the White House was chosen in a contest.

The winner was Irishman James Hoban.

His design was influenced by the Leinster House in Dublin.
