Obiano – 3 Years Triple Good (3)

Today, Governor Obiano gives update on the two remaining Pillars of his Economic Blueprint – Trade & Commerce and Oil & Gas.

Trade and Commerce –
Our objective in Trade and Commerce is to maintain our enviable position among the Top-3 states in the commercial sector in Nigeria. To achieve this, we took an institutional approach and established the Anambra State Markets Agency (ASMA) with a mandate to rehabilitate, construct and regulate commercial activities in major markets across the state. We figured that this would bring a level of organization to the commercial environment in the state and it did. We initiated the choose-your-project scheme for all the 61 markets in the state that will cost the government the sum of N610m, indicating an even distribution of N10m per market. In addition, we have designed a policy framework for the introduction of e-commerce, organised the first joint trade fair of the three Chambers of Commerce in Onitsha Nnewi and Awka, constructed toilet facilities to improve the hygiene levels in our markets and conducted a highly successful Financial Literacy programme in partnership with DFID for traders in Onitsha and Nnewi.

The Fourth Pillar is Oil and Gas –
Our objective in Oil and Gas is to provide infrastructure that will open access to the oil-bearing communities and initiate actions that will boost production output and attract investors into the sector. So far, we have built the longest bridge in the South East that opens access to the oilfields across the Omambala River. Similarly, work has reached advanced stages on the second bridge that creates access to the oilfields through Umueje. Again, we have successfully produced a Concession Map for oil and gas assets in the state and signed an agreement with UDIPPCO Limited, an independent power plant that plans to generate 80 mega-watts of electricity from the gas reserves in Umerum.
