OmaniPadmeHum:

They both happen almost simultaneously.

However in many cases the lightning is seen before the Thunder is heard. Thunder is sound caused by lightning.

While they happen at the same time, why lightning is seen before the Thunder is hears is because the Speed of light travels faster than the speed of sound. The lighting and thunder usually happen at the same time. But their speeds of travel vary. In fact if I see lightning and I start counting down to when I hear the thunder, I can tell you how far/distance into the cloud the lighting/thunder occurred.

She is trying to clarify that Thunder in itself is just noise/sound from the expansion of air around where the lightning takes place. It is like a sonic boom. Sound wave travelling/expanding. Thunder in itself cannot kill. Unless it scares you to death that is.

It is like an explosion seen from a distance. First you see the bright light then seconds later you hear the sound. The sound in itself cannot kill you, except you get scared to death.

Reason why people say thunder killed the person is because it happens so close to the earth surface that the time of the lightning strike and thunder is almost simultaneous. People then attribute death to Thunder (the sound) instead of lightning (the charge and high temperature).

Thanks for the explanations. However I knew all those. What I meant was since most thunder comes with lightening we can see reason to excuse those who attributed it to thunder.

Actually Sir, it is d other way round. Most lightening come with thunder.
ciao..

I disagree sire. Many lightening still occur without thunder but all thunder occurs as a result of lightening. Hence I said most(its actually all) thunder comes with lightening. I know you are trying to tell us thunder is actually a product of lightening but but saying the sound of a blast cannot kill humans is equally wrong.

No there is no reason to attribute it to Thunder if you know these facts as claimed.

Wrong information is wrong information. It is wrongly attributed to thunder and that is the fact.

In an exposion it is not the sound that kills per se. It is the pressure and flying projectiles. In the same vein, it is not the thunder that kills per se,but the electrical voltage and heat from the lightning. It electrocutes and burns. QED

[quote author=henrixx post=55627451]sorry bro. enlighten me on this. how does lightening kill. cos that thing always scares me[/okay.first of all, thunder is sound, and d sound it carries might not be strong enough to damage hearing and that's the worst it could do,but on the other hand, lightening is electricity, lightening carries billion volts of electricity which is capable of electrocution or paralysing someone and sometimes too in rare cases, lightening and its voltage could serve as a defiliberator, just google lightening or watch the movie the age of adaline.hope I helped a little bit and don't be scared of it cos wat must be,must be]
